The PGA Tour returns from a week off with the World Wide Technology Championship, which remains in Mexico but has moved from Mayakoba’s El Camaleon Golf Club to a new venue, El Cardonal Golf Course, which becomes the first PGA Tour course to be designed by Tiger Woods.

Racing & Football Outlook golf tipster Joe Champion has picked out three to follow at 14/1, 30/1 and 50/1 in Cabo San Lucas this week.

World Wide Technology Championship predictions & betting tips

World Wide Technology Championship best bet – Sahith Theegala to win at 14/1

The PGA Tour cut ties with Mayakoba after the Playa del Carmen course was announced as a 2023 LIV Golf venue so El Cardonal, which Woods describes as influenced by the California courses which he grew up on, takes over hosting duties for the latest edition of the WWTC.

Measuring in at 7,363 yards, this par-72 layout offers plenty of space off the tee, which will contrast sharply with Mayakoba, which was renowned as a tight, fiddly track where straight drivers tended to prosper.

Russell Henley, the most accurate driver on the PGA Tour this season, won in Mayakoba last season but he has opted not to return to defend his title and the creation of the new FedEx Cup Fall Series has meant that the biggest names have also decided not to tee it up.

However, we do get to see arguably the two best maidens on the PGA Tour, Ludvig Aberg and Cameron Young, who are the top two in the betting as they attempt to break through for the first time at this level.

Given Woods’s influence on El Cardonal, those with ties to California should enjoy this test and a trio of Golden State natives are well worth keeping an eye on with third-favourite Sahith Theegala looking like the best bet of the bunch.

Theegala made his PGA Tour breakthrough last month, winning the Fortinet Championship in his home state, and he returned after a month off with a 19th-place finish in Japan’s Zozo Championship two week’s ago which should have him spot-on for this test.

He’s making his event debut and the switch to El Cardonal is a positive for a player who can be wild off the tee but is developing into a dependable iron-player, while his touch around the greens is a significant asset.

World Wide Technology Championship each-way best bet – Akshay Bhatia each-way at 30/1

Akshay Bhatia very much falls into the same bracket as Theegala – he’s a rising star with a recent PGA Tour win under his belt, which also came in his home state of California at the Barracuda Championship.

Bhatia’s form dipped after his Barracuda win but he’s finished 43rd, 35th and 21st in his last three appearances so he appears to be heading back in the right direction.

World Wide Technology Championship best outsider punt – Justin Suh each-way at 50/1

The final Californian who merits support is Justin Suh, a superb iron-player who has become a reliable PGA Tour performer, missing just two cuts all year and producing one of his best performances of 2023 when tenth at the Zozo last time out.

At a decent each-way price, consider a bet on Robby Shelton, a talented operator who was able to brush off a poor year to finish fourth in Japan. He was also sixth when this event took place at Mayakoba in 2019.
