The UEFA Super Cup takes place on Wednesday as Champions League winners Chelsea face off against Europa League champions Villarreal at Windsor Park in Belfast.
These matches have thrown up some entertaining affairs in recent years and both teams have scored in eight of the last nine editions of the competition, and we’ve put together a 24/1 bet builder ahead of the action.
24/1 Chelsea vs Villarreal bet builder
Chelsea to win
Chelsea have lost three Super Cup finals since Roman Abramovich’s takeover back in 2003 but this could well be their year.
The Blues had an excellent record against Spanish opposition last season as they took four points from two games against Sevilla in the Champions League group stages, then overcame Atletico Madrid in the last 16 by winning both legs before dumping out Real Madrid in the last four with a win and a draw.
Seven of the last eight Super Cups have been won by the Champions League winner and we’re expecting that pattern to continue, and we feel Chelsea can get the job done in 90 minutes.
Both Teams to Score
As mentioned earlier, both teams have scored in eight of the last nine UEFA Super Cups and the stats for both teams suggests we’ll see goals at both ends.
Chelsea managed a clean sheet in the Champions League final but that was their only shut-out in their last six games, and both teams have scored in all four of their pre-season outings.
Villarreal have only drawn a blank once in their last 20 competitive games, and that came in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Arsenal when they were protecting a lead.
Kai Havertz to score at anytime
Kai Havertz hit the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City and kept his shooting boots on through the summer with two goals in four games for Germany at Euro 2020.
Chelsea are likely to line up without a recognised centre-forward so the goals will come from elsewhere and Havertz is out pick.
Gerard Moreno to have one shot on target
Gerard Moreno may have had a disappointing Euro 2020 with Spain but last season for Villarreal he had an excellent campaign. The forward finished as the joint top scorer in the Europa League with seven goals and averaged 1.2 shots on target per-game, while his record in La Liga was slightly better with 1.4 shots on target per-game.
Marcos Alonso to have one shot on target
Marcos Alonso is a defender who likes to get forward and a shot on target for the Chelsea man is the final selection for our bet builder. The Spaniard is capable of trying his luck from range and will also go up for corners, so there are a few ways he could get an effort on target against Villarreal.
Alonso averaged 1.7 shots per-game in the Premier League last season and just under half of those were on target (0.8), while his Champions League stats were 1.0 shots-per-game and exactly half of those were on target.
