28/1 & 14/1 Tips for the Sentry Tournament of Champions

The first PGA Tour heads to Hawaii this week for the first event of 2022 the Sentry Tournament of Champions takes place on Maui.

Our golf expert Steve Palmer has offered his thoughts ahead of the tournament and has a pair of each-way tips for the calendar-year opening competition.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions starts in Hawaii on Thursday night and a pair of Patricks could make the PGA Tour viewing more enjoyable for punters.

Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Reed are both hugely determined characters who possess typically razor-sharp short-games – and they can both be expected to turn up at the Plantation Course this week well prepared.

Cantlay and Reed have plenty of experience of the layout and have shown they can handle its dimensions. Cantlay has finished in the top 15 in each of his three previous visits and was fourth in the 2020, while Reed won the tournament in 2015 and has twice finished second since.

Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa dominate the betting for the Sentry, but the value lies with Cantlay and Reed, who are deeper in the market and both look strong options for each-way bets.

Cantlay was magnificent in the FedEx Cup playoffs at the end of last summer, winning the BMW Championship after a duel with Bryson DeChambeau, then following up with another head-to-head success over Rahm in the Tour Championship at East Lake. Cantlay made his Ryder Cup debut after that – and he was superb – going unbeaten through four matches.

Putting has become a significant strength of Cantlay – he broke records for the statistics he produced on the greens during the BMW Championship – and this week’s low-scoring assignment means a hot flat-stick is almost essential for success. Reed can usually be relied upon to convert his chances, too. The Texan suffered some ill health in August last year, but second place in the Bermuda Championship showed fitness and form was returning, then that fact was underlined in the Hero World Challenge just before Christmas. Reed finished third in the Hero, contending in elite company, and can do likewise this week.
