Scotland and England renew rivalries on Tuesday night to mark the 150th anniversary of their first-ever meeting – football’s maiden international match.
The anniversary has come at the perfect time for Scotland, who could qualify for Euro 2024 on Tuesday if results in their qualifying group go their way. They’ve won five straight qualifiers to put them on the verge of Germany, so they should be full of confidence going into this encounter.
Scotland vs England Ultimate Bet Builder
Scotland to win
England head to Hampden Park on the back of a pretty dour 1-1 draw against Ukraine in Poland. That draw ended England’s perfect record in 2023, but Scotland have managed to hold on to theirs.
Steve Clarke’s side have won all five qualifiers, which includes a 2-0 win over Spain at Hampden and a 2-1 victory away to Norway. The Scots have won to nil in four of their last five, with an Erling Haaland penalty the only goal they’ve conceded this year.
Scotland’s turnaround hasn’t just come this year. They won four of six Nations League games in 2022, earning promotion to the top flight of European sides in the Nations League. Their results put Scotland among the top tier in Europe, which could spell trouble for England.
The hosts should be full of confidence and it’s easy to imagine that Hampden will be rocking for this huge fixture. The home fans have plenty to shout about right now, while England’s strongest lineup looked uninspired in a game they were heavy favourites for.
Scotland look like a big price given not just their form, but the manner of their wins. With eight victories in their last nine competitive matches, back the hosts for a victory.
Scott McTominay to score
While he’s a bit-part-player at Manchester United, but McTominay has been fantastic for Scotland. No player has outscored him in qualifying, with the midfielder scoring six times across five matches.
He scored within six minutes in their visit to Cyprus in midweek and he can expose what should be a rotated England defence. Even his club teammate Harry Maguire probably doesn’t know what to expect up against a player who seems to hit another level when he pulls on a Scotland jersey.
McTominay seems to lead by example for his country and he’s scored four times across his last three appearances at Hampden, so back him to find the net.
Conor Gallagher to be carded
With Southgate expected to shuffle his pack, Conor Gallagher is one player who should get a chance to impress. The Chelsea midfielder has made a big impression on Mauricio Pochettino already and he’s kept his place in the Blues’ starting lineup despite big money arrivals.
However, the midfielder does have his disciplinary issues. He’s been carded on 31 occasions since the start of the 2020/21 season when he was on loan at West Brom. He picked up plenty of cards at Crystal Palace too, while he was carded 12 times for Chelsea last term.
The midfielder was booked against Nottingham Forest in his last game before the international break. This game is likely to turn into a battle given the heated atmosphere, which could backfire on Gallagher. As a result, he’s a great value option to be carded on Tuesday.
