The Bundesliga visitors know avoiding defeat at Stamford Bridge would see them into the last eight and they are playing with a real swagger at the moment.
BVB have won all ten of their matches in 2023, which includes an impressive 2-1 victory over Leipzig last time out, whereas Chelsea have scored just five goals in their 12 games in all competitions since the turn of the year.
Over 3.5 cards
There were ten cards when these two teams met at Signal Iduna Park three weeks ago and, given what is at stake, expect another feisty affair at Stamford Bridge.
Dutch referee Danny Makkelie has taken charge of four Champions League games this season and has booked a total of 16 players, an average of four per outing.
Kalidou Koulibaly to be booked
Given Chelsea’s defensive absentees – Thiago Silva is out and Reece James is a doubt – Kalidou Koulibaly looks almost guaranteed to start at the heart of their defence and he could be value for a card.
Koulibaly has been booked six times in 17 appearances for Chelsea since arriving from Napoli and Dortmund’s pace on the break could again see him fall victim to the referee.
Julian Brandt to score at any time
Julian Brandt has been a key figure for Dortmund in their recent winning run and the creative midfielder looks a nice price to get his name on the scoresheet.
Brandt played the full 90 minutes in the first leg, registering two shots one of which was on target, and regularly found himself in dangerous areas.
The 26-year-old midfielder has netted four goals in his last seven starts, taking his tally to the season to eight goals from 23 matches, and he looks a likely goal scoring candidate for the visitors.
Over 9.5 corners
Despite there being only one goal in the opening leg in Germany, both teams had plenty of chances and that enabled them to rack up 15 corners between them.
At some point Chelsea have to go for broke in their pursuit of avenging the first-leg loss and there could be another high corner count at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues’ game at home to Leeds on Saturday saw 12 corners while there were ten in Dortmund’s Friday night triumph over Leipzig, so it seems likely there will be at least 10 in total in Tuesday’s Champions League fixture.
