AFCON 2024 Predictions & Tips

Morocco To Win AFCON 2024

Senegal lifted their first Africa Cup of Nations title after winning the 2021 tournament and another nation who have waited a long time to get their hands on the trophy could do so this year.

Morocco were the 1976 champions and have come close to winning the crown for a second time, including finishing as runners-up in 2004.

However the Atlas Lions broke new ground when they reached the last four of the World Cup just over 12 months ago and that form is the obvious standout piece in this field.

There was no fluke about their success in Qatar as they topped a section containing Croatia, Belgium and Canada before beating Spain and Portugal in the knockout stages.

A 2-0 defeat to France in the semi-finals is nothing to be ashamed of and Walid Regragui’s side are the outstanding candidates in this tournament.
Defence tends to come to the fore at Afcon. There were just 100 goals scored in 52 games in the last event, and that is an area where Morocco have a clear advantage.

A back five of Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi, Nayef Aguerd, Romain Saiss and Noussair Mazraoui will be the envy of their rivals for the crown and is complemented by quality throughout the squad.

Almost all of the squad that led their nation on that historic run remain and players such as Hakim Ziyech will have benefitted from a summer move to increase their game time.

In Youssef En-Nesyri the side have a top-level striker and it is hard to pick a hole in the squad, which has also been freshened up with some interesting youngsters since the World Cup. Egypt, Algeria, Senegal and hosts Ivory Coast are all serious contenders, but in what is undoubtedly a competitive field Morocco simply look to have the strongest claims.

Vincent Aboubakar Top Scorer AFCON 2024

Vincent Aboubakar was the runaway winner of the Golden Boot in the last Africa Cup of Nations, scoring eight goals, and he could well be overpriced to repeat the trick.

The absence of Bryan Mbeumo and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting mean that Aboubakar is undoubtedly Cameroon’s number one man and he has been in fine goalscoring form for Besiktas this season.

The 31-year-old has scored goals wherever he has gone in a storied career and looks an outstanding candidate to be the tournament’s top scorer.

AFCON 2024 Group Winners Accumulator Tip

GROUP A – Nigeria

This section sports two West African heavyweights in Nigeria and Ivory Coast, who are the clear standouts.

The hosts could be given a good run for their money by Nigeria, who lost just once in 2023 and have a plethora of attacking options, including Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho and Samuel Chukwueze.

GROUP B – Egypt

Egypt have a favourite’s chance of topping Group B, particularly as Ghana have not quite been at their best recently, losing three of their last four games in 2023.

A solid defence and the efforts of Mo Salah may be enough for the Pharaohs to top the section with the Black Stars likely runners-up.

GROUP C – Senegal

Defending champions Senegal beat Cameroon in October and should be able to repeat the trick again here.

The Lions of Teranga even sport a victory over Brazil recently and it’s hard to see anyone but them topping this group.

GROUP D – Algeria

Algeria are a short price to win the group and it’s hard to see past them given the other teams in the section.

The North Africans have also been boosted by the inclusion of Houssem Aouar, which seriously bolsters their midfield.

GROUP E – Mali

Mali topped their qualifying group and could be a value selection to repeat the trick at the finals.

Their midfield looks particularly deep with Yves Bissouma, Boubacar Traore and Reims youngster Kamory Doumbia all likely to contribute.

They could be stronger in attack but in a tournament that tends to be low-scoring, their solid defence may be more important.

Tunisia are their likely rivals to top the section but they didn’t pull up many trees with their form in 2023 and look short enough.

GROUP F – Morocco

Morocco reached the semi-finals of the World Cup last season and this is a serious drop in class for them.

The Atlas Lions have an impressive back line of top level talent and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou became a cult figure for them in Qatar.

This is broadly the same group that managed that achievement and they should be able to top Group F.

AFCON & Asian Cup 2024 Double

The 2023 Asian Cup begins this Friday and there is a simple formula to remember ahead of the month-long competition – Japan have the best team, South Korea have the best players, and Iran and Australia can always win the tournament.

Japan are undeniably the best team in Asia as can be seen from their recent record. The Samurai Blue have won ten games in a row including a 4-1 success against Germany in Wolfsburg, and in that run they have scored 45 goals and conceded only six.

At 17th in the Fifa rankings, Japan are the highest-placed Asian country, and the majority of their squad are based in Europe, and we’re combining them with Morocco for our AFCON & Asian Cup double.
