Best Hole In Ones at The Open Championship!
It is, without doubt, one of sport’s greatest sights, and from a purely technical perspective surely one of the most difficult to accomplish. Watch the best hole in ones ever at the Open Championship!
The hole in one, the pinnacle of golf, is achieved by pro players and amateurs alike all over the world each and every day. But to achieve the great feat at the greatest golfing event of them all, The Open Championship….well, could life get any better for a golfer.
On the eve of this year’s Open, we take a look at some of the finest struck ‘aces’ in the tournament’s history. And remember, if you fancy one to be struck at this year’s event you can still get up to 3/1 with most bookies….
Ernie Els – 2004
What is incredible about this hole in one is that ‘Big Easy’ sunk it on Royal Troon’s infamous Postage Stamp hole; a 128 yard Par 3 surrounded by bunkers, water hazards and all sorts of nasties.
The Postage Stamp is a serious examination of a player’s technique, not to mention their courage to attack the pin rather than laying up safe. But for a player of Ernie Els’s class, and he was at his absolute best around this time, it proved no problem.
A gorgeous little iron shot in, little touch of backspin, and the rest is history.
Gene Sarazen – 1973
Ernie Els’s achievement in scoring an ace at the Postage Stamp is once-in-a-lifetime stuff, you’d imagine. But oh no: this wasn’t the first time this notorious hole had been penetrated in one. Step forward Gene Sarazen in 1973.
Do you know the best bit? He was 71-years-old when he did it.
Tom Watson & Dustin Johnson – 2011
A hole in one at the Open Championship is a rare old beast, so when one is struck it sends the golfing community into overdrive.
So imagine the buzz when two were struck in the space of two days at the 2011 tournament at the Royal St George’s Club. Tom Watson, 61-years-old and counting, powered a four iron straight into the cup on the Par 3 sixth, a mere day after Dustin Johnson had performed a similar trick at the 16th.
If you’d have backed that you would be a very rich person still to this day.
James Kingston – 2002
Okay, so this one wasn’t actually made at The Open, but it’s a video that the amateur golfer can watch time and time again. James Kingston shanks one into the trees at the 2002 Dunhill Championships, and naturally fears the worst.
Until the ricochet to end all ricochets helps him to record surely the greatest hole in one in golfing history.
