Championship winner prediction – Leeds at 7/2

One big gun was left behind in May but Leeds won’t be hanging around in the Championship for long.

In fact, make it a solitary season with Daniel Farke’s men going up as champions this time.

The Whites were excellent last term after dropping out of the Premier League the year before alongside Leicester and Southampton.

Those two bolted straight back up – alongside Ipswich – leaving the Elland Road club wondering how on earth 90 points and a plus-38 goal difference wasn’t enough to secure a ticket back to the top table.

They had a second chance, of course, in the play-offs, but after breezing past Norwich pretty much forgot to perform against Southampton at Wembley, hence the need to go again.

Naturally they are clear favourites ahead of the latest trio of Premier League discards, Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United, plus a gaggle of big-name tier-two regulars like West Brom, Middlesbrough and Norwich and quietly fancied sides like Coventry and Stoke.

It will be competitive, this division always is, but Leeds showed they have the measure of pretty much everyone last season.

There has been a constant watch-and-wait approach over star wingers Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville, who are on the shopping lists of several bigger clubs but would come with huge price tags, and Dan James can step up in the absence of either.

Archie Gray has gone though Jayden Bogle has arrived from Sheffield United to replace him at right-back, Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev can be paired together in midfield following Pascal Struijk’s welcome return from injury to team up with Joe Rodon in central defence, and this is as solid a spine as any side in the section.

Goals come from all around the pitch and there will be more signings before the window closes on August 30.

It is very hard to see Leeds not challenging because of the calibre of player and manager, their record at Elland Road where they lost just twice last term and boasted the division’s best defensive record, and they can be strengthened if needs be.

Championship promotion prediction – Middlesbrough at 7/2

Behind Leeds the betting are a stack of potentially powerful outfits, among them Middlesbrough, who have finished seventh, fourth and eighth in their last three campaigns and can make the play-offs at the very least.

They are short enough to finish in the top six but more enticing at 7/2 to be promoted.

Boro did well just to contend last term after bidding farewell to 39 league goals in the shape of Chuba Akpom and Cameron Archer before a ball had even been kicked.

Luckily, other stars emerged like Rav van den Berg and Finn Azaz and an unlikely hero in Emmanuel Latte Lath, a well-travelled journeyman of a forward who finished last season in goalscoring style.

The Teeside club, League Cup semi-finalists, lost just one of their last 12 league matches to get within four points off the top six despite a slew of injuries. A more settled defence will ship fewer than 62 goals and make the team become an even more compelling challenger.
