Dutch Eredivisie 2022/23 outright predictions & tips

It has been a summer of change in the Eredivisie as it so often is, but new players and old faces alike are set to take to the field on Friday 5th August as the 2022/23 campaign gets underway.

Can Ajax achieve a third straight Eredivisie crown for the first time since a run of four ending in 2013/14 after losing some big names, or will their old foes Feyenoord and PSV step up to the plate to oust them from the top spot this time around?

Despite the odds-on price about Ajax becoming champions for a record-extending 37th time, they won the league by a mere two-point margin last time around, suggesting that such an outcome is by no means an inevitability.

We’ve taken a good look at the finer details, so read on and stick with us for all of your Eredivisie betting needs!

Eredivisie winner odds

Ajax are warm favourites for the Eredivisie title this season with PSV relatively close in behind. Ajax’s bitter rivals Feyenoord take a distant third spot in the odds list while AZ Alkmaar make up the top-four in the betting.

*All odds correct as of 21:00, 25th July 2022 on bet365.

  • Ajax – 8/13
  • PSV – 9/4
  • Feyenoord – 7/1
  • AZ Alkmaar – 14/1

Eredivisie winner prediction: PSV at 9/4

This is set to be a season of transition for defending champions Ajax, they lost their enigmatic manager Erik ten Hag to Manchester United while big stars of the squad Lisandro Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico, Sebastien Haller and Ryan Gravenberch have followed him out of the exit door.

That list of names doesn’t even cover the full extent of leavers and while some of the approximate £110m generated from the sales of those players has been reinvested in the likes of winger Steven Bergwijn, Europa League finalist Calvin Bassey and local lad Brian Brobbey, such an upheaval of playing staff could have a negative effect as new boss Alfred Schreuder tries to implement his ideas.

As for Feyenoord, they were well off the title pace despite finishing third and they have lost two of their biggest stars during the summer. Without obvious replacements for Tyrell Malacia and Luis Sinisterra at the time of writing, it is difficult to see how the Rotterdammers will match the other members of the traditional Dutch ‘Big Three’ this season.

The bookmakers aren’t really giving AZ Alkmaar a prayer despite being fourth in the betting and that is for good reason, their best chance of a first Eredivisie crown since 2008/09 came in the abandoned season when they were going tit for tat with Ajax. However, the Cheese Heads have never looked like challengers since, having to settle for a fifth-placed finish after ending 2021/22 with a four-game winless run ahead of a relatively quiet summer on the transfer front.

That takes us on nicely to the main selection, PSV have a largely settled squad and despite the departures of Mario Gotze, Ritsu Doan and Eran Zahavi, their group has not suffered such a heavy rotation as others touted to be in the race.

Now headed by legendary Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, his ideas may take root quickly given that he has held coaching roles at the club since 2016.

A serial winner as a player, van Nistelrooy has already brought four players in from the Jong side, so it will be interesting to see if the next generation of PSV talent such as attacking pair Johan Bakayoko and Ismael Saibari can produce breakout seasons in the senior side.

The evidence is that they just might, with Bakayoko (G17, A10) and Saibari (G5, A6) producing a mammoth 38 goal involvements between them in the second-tier last time around. That is not to mention the addition of proven Eredivisie talent, former AZ man Guus Til and scorer of 94 goals for PSV, Luuk de Jong, who recently plied his trade at Barcelona!

PSV haven’t exactly splashed the cash like their rivals, but some smart acquisitions combined with a new manager who knows the club inside out could just be the perfect recipe for the Eindhoveners to close that pesky two-point gap in what will surely be an exciting Eredivisie title race in 2022/23.

Eredivisie relegation tip: Volendam at 13/10

Last season’s second-placed Eerste Divisie finishers Volendam make their long-awaited return to the top flight after a 13-year hiatus, yet it could be a short-lived one unless they can do some serious business before the start of the campaign.

Volendam have strengthened with just one signing at the time of writing, a free transfer from Utrecht, centre-back Benaissa Benamar, while no fewer than 16 players have left the club. That is not to mention the fact that Volendam have not spent longer than a single season in the top-flight in either of their two short visits since the turn of the century.

Both of those relegation campaigns saw the ‘Other Oranje’ finish with 18 or fewer points and we can see them facing a similarly depressing fate this time around at a rather attractive 13/10 given the circumstances.

Eredivisie top goalscorer prediction: Vangelis Pavlidis (AZ) at 10/1

Backing in the top goalscorer market is always a minefield, yet the 7/2 price on favourite Luuk de Jong to finish top of the pile upon his return to PSV simply doesn’t represent value.

We are sticking our necks out on AZ’s star striker Vangelis Pavlidis to pick up the golden boot this season. He enjoyed his finest scoring Eredivisie season yet with 18 goals in his first season at AZ last year, making it three consecutive seasons with 11+ league goals. Two of which were with perennial strugglers Willem II!

Such consistency highlights that the Greek hitman is no flash in the pan, so back the AZ star to smash yet another high-scoring return in 2022/23 at a double-figure price.
