Denmark team profile

Previous best: Winners (1992)

Denmark shocked Europe in 1992 when they came out of nowhere to win Euro 1992 in Sweden. And when I say came out of nowhere, I mean it.

The Danes didn’t even qualify for the finals but the breakup of Yugoslavia saw them drafted in as late replacements. They came second behind hosts Sweden in the group stages but a penalty win over Netherlands set up a final in Gothenburg against a reunified Germany, with goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort handing them a famous victory.

Danish dark horses set for deep run

Denmark went unbeaten in qualifying and confirmed their place in Euro 2020 with a final-day draw with Republic of Ireland, but that all came under former manager, Age Hareide.

Kasper Hjulmand has since taken over and impressed the fans with his progressive style, and their form in 2021 so far shows that they aren’t a side to be taken lightly, winning three from three by an aggregate scoreline of 14-0.

Denmark have lost only twice – both against Belgium – since the start of 2019 and while that doesn’t bode well for their group-topping prospects in Group B it does show they can hold their own against good opposition.

Christian Eriksen aside, Denmark’s squad does lack that Hollywood appeal that usually draws pundits’ attention. Instead they will settle for a good, if not spectacular, squad that looks very well balanced.

Kasper Schmeichel offers proven quality between the sticks behind a solid defensive pair of Simon Kjaer and Andreas Christensen, while a midfield pivot of Thomas Delaney and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is not to be underestimated. Christian Eriksen is obviously the big name in attack, but Yussuf Poulsen, Martin Braithwaite, Kasper Dolberg and Jonas Wind are all very capable players too.

One to watch: Christian Eriksen

This Denmark squad is full of talent but the standout name is undoubtedly Christian Eriksen. The former Spurs midfielder helped Inter Milan to the Serie A title this season and has an excellent record for his country.

He was the top scorer in Group D of qualification with five goals and is one of two players in the Denmark squad with more than 100 caps. He possesses passing and shooting ability in spades and will be a key figure in attack as he looks to make up for his penalty miss against Croatia in World Cup 2018.

Rising star: Jonas Wind

Just a few years ago Nice striker Kasper Dolberg was touted as the man to lead Denmark’s line for years to come, but the 23-year-old hasn’t quite lived up to his potential and manager Kasper Hjulmand has taken a liking to the relatively unknown Jonas Wind.

One of just three Denmark-based players in the squad, 22-year-old Copenhagen striker Wind is expected to spearhead the attack in their 4-2-3-1 system. He ended the season with four goals in six appearances for his club and has scored against Sweden, Belgium and Israel in the past half a year.

Did you know…

Denmark have won just three European Championship matches since their shock 1992 victory.

Predicted lineup

Best bet

Denmark to reach Euro 2020 quarter-finals at 11/8

Group B favourites Belgium have beaten Denmark twice since the last World Cup so it would be a big shock to see Denmark topping the group, but qualification ahead of Finland and Russia is non-negotiable given their talents.

If they do finish as runners-up, Denmark face Group A’s second-placed side. With Italy hot favourites for that group that would leave Denmark facing a winnable tie with Switzerland, Turkey or Wales to reach the quarter-finals.

They put in a good showing at the World Cup to reach the last-16 and should have more than enough about them to make it to the final eight in the summer.
