Last weekend saw the return of our Experts’ Best Bets feature as the EFL kicked back into life and this Saturday we have even more to choose from, with the Premier League, La Liga and Bundesliga all raising the curtain on the 2021/22 season.
Two of FST’s three experts – Alex Wrigley and Gareth Freeman – got their season off to a winning start thanks to Rotherham’s win over Plymouth and Leicester’s Community Shield triumph. Can they follow it up with more success this week?

Man Utd vs Leeds – Over 2.5 goals at 8/13
The last meeting between these sides at Old Trafford ended in a 6-2 win for Manchester United and while I’m not expecting a result quite on that scale it does look set to be another thriller.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side averaged 1.92 goals per game in the Premier League last season and looked really up for it in front of 55,000 fans at Old Trafford in their pre-season friendly against Everton.
Seven of their last nine league matches have featured at least three goals and in Leeds they have an opponent who saw a total of 116 goals in their 38 top-flight games last season. Only two sides saw more goals than the Lilywhites, one of which was Manchester United.

West Brom vs Luton – West Brom to win at 13/20
While West Brom only picked up a point in their opener, their performance in their 2-2 draw at Bournemouth suggests they’ve adapted to their new manager’s approach quicker than expected.
The Baggies should have an easier time of things this weekend. They meet a Luton side who lost nine of 11 trips to top-half sides last season, including four losses to nil at the top four. With West Brom boasting a strong starting 11, I’m backing them to prove too much for the Hatters.

Cheltenham vs Wycombe – Wycombe to win at 6/4
Wycombe showed no signs of a relegation hangover when beating Accrington 2-1 last time out in their League One opener. Wycombe ended last season well on the travels with two wins, two draws and just one defeat in their final five away games.
Promoted Cheltenham managed a 1-1 draw at home to Crewe to start the new season but the Wanderers are a step up in class and I fancy them to take three points here.

Rochdale vs Scunthorpe – Rochdale to win at 10/11
Both Rochdale and Scunthorpe suffered defeat in their League Two openers, but it was the performance of the Iron that should be far more concerning.
Scunthorpe, who have made big budget cuts and lost 17 players over pre-season, suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Swindon, having just 37 per cent possession and needing a penalty to get off the mark.
Neil Cox’s charges failed to win any of their final ten games last season and are prime relegation candidates this time around, so should be turned over at a Rochdale side who showed significant promise in a 3-2 loss to a well-drilled Harrogate on the opening weekend.

Wimbledon vs Bolton – Both teams to score at 10/11
Bolton made a dramatic return to League One with a 3-3 draw against MK Dons before showcasing their defensive grit by beating Barnsley on penalties after a goalless draw in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
Another entertaining game is on the cards when they travel to AFC Wimbledon, who scored 16 goals in their final eight matches of 2020-21 to secure League One survival.
They kicked off this term with a 2-1 win at Doncaster before knocking Charlton out of the League Cup and neither side is likely to sit back in Wimbledon’s first game back at Plough Lane.

Burnley vs Brighton – Brighton to win at 29/20
Burnley only managed 33 goals last season and have failed to make any additions to their attacking options. Forwards Chris Wood and Matej Vydra scored nearly 50% of those goals and both reported back late to preseason after playing at the Olympics and Euros respectively.
Brighton may have lost Ben White but have depth at centre back and have made some shrewd additions elsewhere. They should be too strong for a Burnley side who look set to struggle this season.
