Fantasy Football Tips 18/19: GW17 Options

A lifelong Birmingham City fan, Tom relocated to Germany for five years after graduating from university, where his interest in the Bundesliga developed. He began writing about and betting on German football for FST in 2016. He's also an avid fantasy football player and closely follows the Premier League and European competitions.

GW17 Fantasy Football Tips

Raheem Sterling (Manchester City, £11.6m)

You might have to do a bit of tinkering to get Raheem Sterling into your fantasy football team, but the Englishman could prove a valuable City differential in the coming weeks. Sterling did blank in his last outing away to Chelsea, but he’s second overall in the FPL charts. His performances this season have been better than ever before and Sterling also ranks second for both key passes (27) and shots on target (17) within the City squad as well, behind only David Silva (36) and Sergio Aguero (19) respectively.

Notably, Sterling has scored six of his eight goals at the Etihad too – in fact, since the start of last season, he’s scored 17 goals and assisted 23 in just 21 appearances there – so he’s one to watch this weekend ahead of a match at home to Everton. Marco Silva’s men have kept a clean sheet in just 14% of their away matches this season and Sterling has a good recent record against the Toffees – the Englishman scored in both matches against them last season… enough said!

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal, £11.5m)

After a sluggish start to the 18/19 Premier League campaign, Aubameyang looks back to his best and as dangerous as ever. His brace in the North London derby a few weeks back took him to 10 goals total – now joint top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with Mo Salah – and when combined with his assist and three bonus points earned him a massive 16 point haul. Nobody can say that his form since joining Arsenal has been a fluke.

Aubameyang is also the highest scoring forward in the game, averaging a massive 6.1 points per outing – what would have been one of the best averages among forwards last season too. His 14 shots on goal over Arsenal’s last four games also place him high up the rankings among Fantasy Premier League forwards in that category. He should be able to maintain those numbers against a poor Southampton defence on Sunday.

Heung-Min Son (Spurs, £8.5m)

Pochettino’s men have bounced back strong since that dramatic North London derby and South Korean international Heung-Min Son has been at the centre of it all. He’s started in each of Spurs’ last four Premier League matches, scoring three goals and assisting two, and so he should continue to feature prominently over the coming weeks. He was also nominated for the November 2018 ‘Goal of the Month’ award for his stunning solo run against Chelsea.

He has two stellar seasons of Premier League (and Fantasy Premier League) football under his belt after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2016 and you’d have to like his chances of continuing his form this weekend. Son’s 16 shots on goal and 9 shots on target are more than any player over the last four matches and Spurs host a Burnley side that has conceded more shots on goal (330) than any other side in the English top flight – 100 more than 16 of the other sides too.

Felipe Anderson (West Ham, £7.3m)

Felipe Anderson has become more and more influential at West Ham as the season has gone on, and with Marko Arnautovic sidelined for the Christmas period, he should continue to play an even more pivotal role in the weeks to come. Anderson has bagged five goals in his last six Premier League outings, including one against Crystal Palace last weekend, which, when added to the rest of his goals and assists so far this season, make him the 3rd highest scoring midfielder under the £7.5m mark.

His 13 shots on target are second in the West Ham team only to fan-favourite Marko Arnautovic (17), but Anderson also has creativity on his side, with his 28 key passes ranking him just outside the top 10 of all Premier League creators. Anderson will face a struggling Fulham defence that is without a clean sheet in each of their 16 Premier League games. He also follows that up with a number of favourable fixtures over the Christmas period.

Jose Holebas (Watford, £4.7m)

Jose Holebas has been one of the most impressive defensive creators in the Premier League this season. His 24 key passes are second only to Lucas Digne among defenders – his role on free kicks and corners helps towards those numbers – and his four assists so far this season sees him joint 3rd in that regard. And though he hasn’t been doing too well as of late, Watford have had a tricky run of fixtures to navigate.

Going forward, Watford’s schedule looks much more favourable, with Javi Gracia’s side facing just two of the ‘big six’ in their next 11 Premier League outings, and this run begins with a match at home to Cardiff City. The Bluebirds have failed to score in 57% of their away outings this term and have also conceded an average of two goals per game on the road too. Holebas, therefore, has huge potential for both attacking and defensive returns on Saturday.
