It’s been a dramatic summer break in the world of Formula 1 but now the attention finally turns back to the racing as ten teams head to Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix.

After four winners from five in the French Grand Prix, Alex Wrigley followed it up with another three winners from four tips in the Hungarian Grand Prix and is now on the hunt for a fifth-successive profitable Grand Prix!

At the time of writing, six cars will take grid penalties due to power unit changes and among them are World Drivers’ Championship frontrunners Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.

Belgian Grand Prix qualifying predictions

Qualifying winning car – Mercedes at 7/4

Lewis Hamilton is still waiting for his first pole position of the season and the Belgian Grand Prix could represent the perfect opportunity for the improving Mercedes.

Both Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, among others, will start from the back of the grid after taking engine penalties and that means it is unlikely we will see them pushing for the perfect lap in Q3.

Hamilton has taken pole at Spa in three of the last five Grands Prix there and while he was outqualified by George Russell in Hungary he has qualified ahead of his teammate in three of the last five races.

That being said, Russell himself is a solid bet in this market, too. He took pole before the summer break and qualified an excellent second in his backmarker Williams in last year’s soaking-wet Belgian Grand Prix.

Belgian Grand Prix race predictions

Lewis Hamilton to win at 5/2

With the two big guns – Leclerc and Verstappen – starting at the back of the grid it could well be worth backing Hamilton to take his first win of the year at Spa.

The seven-time world champion has won the Belgian Grand Prix four times, most recently in 2020, and has been showing remarkable improvements over the last few months.

He is the only driver to complete every race of the 2022 season and a second-place finish in Hungary made it five successive podiums for Hamilton.

The previously-struggling Mercedes has cut the deficit to Red Bull and Ferrari and even the imperious Max Verstappen could struggle to cut his way through the entire field on Sunday.

Both cars podium finish – Mercedes at 2/1

Mercedes have had two drivers on the podium in each of the last two races and Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have each finished in the top four in five of the last six races, with the one exception being Russell’s first-lap crash at Silverstone.

They are still lagging behind Red Bull and Ferrari in terms of pace but their reliability is second to none and the two first drivers from the leading teams will start from the back of the grid.

Of course, Verstappen and Leclerc have the pace to cut through the pack but a lot can happen between last and the top three and 2/1 would be a tempting price even without the grid penalties.

Both cars to be classified – Ferrari: No at 13/8

Charles Leclerc is expected to take a new power unit and gearbox and such significant changes always run the risk of causing reliability issues.

That’s not to say reliability concerns weren’t already an issue for Ferrari, with Leclerc and teammate Carlos Sainz suffering seven retirements between them this season.

Both Ferraris have been classified in just five of the last 11 Grands Prix and with Leclerc battling his way through the pack from the back of the grid that adds yet more risk of a collision to the situation, while Kevin Magnussen’s FP1 engine failure in a Ferrari-powered Haas is also a concern.

Safety car period during the race – Yes at 2/5

Last year’s farcical Belgian Grand Prix was started and ended behind the safety car after a weekend of torrential rain but that was far from the first time Spa and the safety car have been acquainted.

The odds may be short, but the safety car has been required in each of the last six Belgian Grands Prix and only three of this season’s races has been free of the safety car.

The risk of a collision is further increased with so many cars starting out of position due to engine penalties. Expect to see a hectic first few laps as these faster cars look to clear the traffic and make up positions.
