The Spanish Grand Prix marks the unofficial start of the European season in Formula 1 and the ten teams have made the short hop over to Barcelona after an exciting few days in Monaco last weekend.

Max Verstappen dominated from start to finish in Monte Carlo, and now the reigning world champion and current World Drivers’ Championship leader returns to a circuit he has very fond memories of.

Verstappen began his Red Bull career with an incredible debut in Spain back in 2016, becoming the youngest-ever Grand Prix winner. Last year he ended a run of five-successive Lewis Hamilton victories in Barcelona and he will be looking for his third win in a row this Sunday.

Spanish Grand Prix track guide

Debut season – 1991

Track length – 4.66km

Number of turns – 14

Most wins – Michael Schumacher & Lewis Hamilton (6)

Most poles – Michael Schumacher (7)

2022 winner – Max Verstappen

Previously the pre-season testing destination for Formula One, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is one of the most familiar tracks on the calendar for many of these drivers, but it has had what is likely to prove a popular revamp this season.

The change is a simple one – The slow, twisting, downhill chicane in Sector 3 has been removed, with the final couple of turns now being almost flat-out right-handers leading up to the pit straight.

This is likely to be the main overtaking area, owing to the long DRS zone before reaching Turn 1.

Spanish Grand Prix predictions & tips

Verstappen win, Alonso & Perez podium at 13/8

The trio of Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have shared the podium more times than any other drivers but this season it is a different trio making the podium their own.

Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso have, in various orders, been on the podium together in three of the six races so far, with Verstappen taking the top spot in two of those.

The reigning world champion has won four of the six Grands Prix so far and came second in the remaining two.

After showing incredible pace in Free Practice 1 he once again looks unstoppable this weekend, while Perez can make good use of Red Bull’s huge car advantage and Alonso can perform in front of a passionate home crowd.

Max Verstappen to win by 10+ seconds at 6/5

Max Verstappen looked imperious in Free Practice 1, with his fastest lap seven-tenths ahead of his teammate and around a second quicker than the rest of the field.

He has won four of the six races so far this season and only failed to win in Saudi Arabia due to car issues.

He won by 27 seconds in Monaco last weekend and beat Perez by 12 seconds in the season-opener in Bahrain, while another huge margin was on the cards in Australia only to be derailed by a late red flag and subsequent safety-car finish.

The race winner has finished at least 20 seconds ahead of the closest non-Red Bull car in four of the six races so far and, given the performance in practice and Verstappen’s penchant for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, another comfortable win looks to be on the cards.

Ocon to finish in the top 6 at 13/8

Esteban Ocon produced a fine drive in Monaco last weekend to claim the third podium finish of his career and the Frenchman, driving the improving Alpine, will bring a boatload of confidence to Spain.

He was third in the timing charts in Friday’s FP1 session and the Alpine has shown remarkable improvements in recent races, with Monaco being their third double-points finish of the season.
