After three days of intensive testing last week, the teams return to the Bahrain International Circuit this weekend to raise the curtain on the 2024 Formula One season.

Max Verstappen started as he meant to go on last year with a pole position and a dominant Grand Prix win and he is odds on to do just that this time around.

However, with a host of alternative markets on offer, there is plenty to get involved in lower down the pecking order.

Charles Leclerc to finish in the top 2 at 9/4

Max Verstappen is 1/6 to win the Bahrain Grand Prix for a second successive year but the 2022 winner, Charles Leclerc, could make a promising start to the season.

Leclerc was forced to retire in last season’s instalment but the Ferrari looked a much better prospect in testing and the Monagesque driver has performed well around this circuit in the past.

Ferrari were only two-tenths off Red Bull in qualifying simulations during testing and were far clear of third-best McLaren, while they almost matched Mercedes in race trim, who were second-best behind the dominant Red Bull.

Sergio Perez is a threat, but the Mexican driver was in torrid form at the end of last season and, with the gap between the cars seemingly reduced compared to this time last year, Leclerc’s talent may shine through.

Ridiculous new name aside, the team formerly known as AlphaTauri impressed during testing as they look to build on a relatively strong end to 2023.

The new car borrows a lot of principles from last season’s championship-winning Red Bull and it showed in testing, with the qualifying simulations putting RB fifth behind parent-team Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes.

Long runs were similarly impressive and they look a good bet to get in the points on Saturday.

AlphaTauri didn’t manage that feat at all last year, but they did have one driver in the top ten in four of the last five Grands Prix and were close to a double haul on multiple occasions.
