FST’s Fantasy Football tips for GW10: back City's unwanted stars

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

We’re on the verge of the busy festive fixture rush, which means it’s time to really hone in our fantasy football selections.

This weekend seems to be a turning point in FPL as everyone backs their premium midfielders, while many are choosing to invest in defence.

We’ve put together a stacked midfield in our side and added class at the back, while we’ve also picked out three sides to target before Friday’s deadline.

Don’t forget that you can get a more in-depth look at each match this weekend in our Premier League predictions.

Fantasy Football Fixtures to Target

Target

Leicester vs Fulham

This clash at the King power kicks off a good run for Leicester. With Sheffield United and Brighton to come there’s a chance for Brendan Rodgers’ men to get back into form.

Avoid

West Brom vs Sheffield United

While it’s tempting to back the Blades to post some points at the Hawthorns, they’ve been unreliable at the back and short up front. With Leicester, Southampton and Man United in the following three games, any Blades signing is likely to be cut quite quickly.

Fantasy Football Transfer Tips this Week

Liverpool can deliver

They may have slipped up at home in the Champions League, but Liverpool are in fine shape in the league. We’re holding onto Neco Williams (3.9m) for the time being, while we’re doubling up on attackers from the champions.

Mo Salah (12.2m) is back and set to start at Brighton, but more on him later. Meanwhile, Diogo Jota (6.6m) is down as an FPL midfielder but he’s set to lead the line for the Reds this weekend. That makes him a great option for your FPL side.

Take a risk on City

Having gone back and forth on it all week, we’re taking a risk on Manchester City this weekend. In recent seasons, that would have been a safe bet, but things have been tougher for Pep Guardiola’s side this time around.

Their recent struggles have led to managers avoiding City’s stars. There are none of Pep Guardiola’s charges in the top 16 transferred in players this week, despite City playing at home to Burnley and Fulham in their next two.

While we don’t deny that City have underperformed, but historically Burnley is the perfect game for them to fix things. City have scored 23 times in the last six meetings between these two, hitting 19 in their last four at the Etihad.

City also look stronger at the back in recent weeks. They won 1-0 at Olympiakos in midweek – a third win to nil in four Champions League group games – which means they’re into the last 16 and should now put their focus on the league.

We think City are set for a good run, while the little love for them from fantasy managers makes their superstars potential differentials. There’s also no need to go big on City, as we’ve gone for two starters at a combined price of 12.4million – a little over one Mo Salah.

Joao Cancelo (5.5m) looks like the best way into the City defence. The versatile full-back has picked up a bonus in three of City’s last five, while averaging five points per game during a more difficult run.

In midfield, the expensive duo of Raheem Sterling (11.5m) and Gabriel Jesus (9.3m) are joined by the more reasonable Ferran Torres (6.9m). He’s already made an impact in the Champions League and the Spaniard should open his Premier League account in this favourable run.

Who to Captain in GW10

Mo Salah

The Egyptian is back in time to feature for the Reds at the Amex and we think he can make an impact against a Brighton side who don’t enjoy these big clashes.

Salah has made the most of his meetings with Brighton in the past, scoring five times and creating three more in six top-flight clashes. That includes a strike in his last two visits to the Amex and an assist in the other.

Last term Salah scored twice and set up a third for the Reds in a comfortable win and given that Brighton have conceded 16 times in the last six meetings between the pair we’re handing the armband to Salah.
