FST’s Premier League Team of the Week: Game Week 7

Born in the south east of Ireland, Simon put his life-long love of football to good use when he started a successful independent blog in 2010. That opened up an alternative route to a career in journalism, and having had work published across a number of sites and publications, Simon joined the staff at Spotlight Sports Group in 2018.

Week 7 of the Premier League is done and dusted, and after the latest round of results and subsequent positional reshuffle, champions Manchester City have reclaimed their place at the table’s summit.

The Citizens eased past Brighton at the Etihad, while there were also wins for Wolves, Arsenal, Everton, Spurs, Leicester, Burnley and Bournemouth.

West Ham embarrassed Manchester United in London, while Chelsea and Liverpool shared the points after a pulsating encounter at Stamford Bridge.

In total, 25 goals flew in across 3 days of Premier League action, but which players put in the most impressive individual performances?

Goalkeeper: Rui Patricio (Wolves)

Portuguese international goalkeeper Rui Patricio made a total of 6 saves for Wolves in their 2-0 win over Southampton on Saturday. The 30-year old has been excellent since arriving at Molineux on a free transfer in the summer and the stopper’s latest brilliant performance against Southampton helped Wolves secure their 3rd Premier League clean sheet of the season.

Right Back: Pablo Zabaleta (West Ham)

Veteran full-back Pablo Zabaleta played with the energy of a man half his age against Manchester United on Saturday. The Argentinean defended expertly throughout and spent as much time marauding into spaces in forward areas as he did in his own third. Zabaleta set the trend for a productive afternoon by laying on the game’s first goal for Felipe Anderson.

Centre Back: David Luiz (Chelsea)

The often-criticized David Luiz was calmness personified at the heart of Chelsea’s defence against Liverpool. The Brazilian made more interceptions and blocks than any of his teammates in their top of the table battle with the Merseysiders.  Luiz performance almost earned Chelsea a clean sheet, though he could do little about Daniel Sturridge’s late long-range equalizer.

Centre Back: Harry Maguire (Leicester City)

Harry Maguire recovered possession 9 times for his team in their 2-0 win against Newcastle at St. James Park on Saturday. The England international made his presence felt at the other end too – his first half shot led to the penalty that broke the deadlock and he added the second goal himself with a trademark header from a corner.

Left Back: Jonny (Wolves)

Full-back Jonny was at his lung-busting best against Southampton, dominating the entire left flank for Wolves in their 2-0 over the Saints. The 24-year old capped a high-quality display with his first goal in English football late on. Jonny had a 100% tackle success rate for Wolves, helping to set the tone for his teammates.

Midfield: Mark Noble (West Ham)

West Ham stalwart Mark Noble excelled in a deep lying play-maker role for the Irons in their impressive 3-1 over struggling Manchester United. Noble was afforded plenty of space at the London Stadium to pull the strings and the 31-year old clever passing and intelligent use of space proved a combination too hot to handle for the visitors. Noble weighted a beautiful pass through to Marko Arnautovic for West Ham’s 3rd goal of the game.

Midfield: Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton)

Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson scored 2 goals in a man of the match performance for Everton in their 3-0 triumph over Fulham. The 29-year old also played 5 key passes during the contest – more than any other player on the pitch during the 90 minutes. Sigurdsson was taken off to a soundtrack of rapturous applause in injury time after a superb individual display at Goodison Park.

Midfield: Johann Berg Gudmundsson (Burnley)

Playing from the right-hand side, Johann Berg Gudmundsson was heavily involved in all the positive parts of Burnley’s play in their 2-1 win at Cardiff on Sunday. Gudmundsson opened the scoring in Wales with a neatly taken back-post header, before putting a perfect cross onto Sam Vokes’ head for the game’s deciding goal 20 minutes later.

Right Forward: Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

Raheem Sterling played a huge part in both of the Citizens’ goals against Brighton on Saturday, scoring one and creating the other in the champions routine win against the Seagulls. Sterling’s darting runs and clever movement were a threat throughout and the England international has already scored 4 Premier League goals in just 6 appearances this season.

Left Forward: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

Eden Hazard continues to electrify and dazzle for Chelsea this season and the Belgian winger produced his latest show-stopping performance against Liverpool on Saturday. Hazard kept himself on top of the Premier League goal scoring charts with the game’s first goal at Stamford Bridge and his close control and ability to beat defenders made him a constant menace for the visitors.

Centre Forward: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Harry Kane scored 2 first half goals to help Tottenham kill what could have been a tricky game at Huddersfield town on Saturday. Kane nodded home a pinpoint Kieran Tripper cross after 25 minutes before slamming home the second from the penalty spot less than 10 minutes later. As always, Kane’s hold up play was impeccable and the talismanic centre forward scored twice from just 3 shots on target against the Terriers.
