Golf tips: Valero Texas Open predictions

With just one week to go before the US Masters tees off, the PGA Tour stays in the Lone Star State following the WGC Match Play for the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio.

Many of the world’s best players are resting up with Augusta around the corner, indeed just one of the current top ten ranked golfers will compete in this week’s Open, however, with some cream skimmed off the top, there is a more competitive field vying for places.

Last week, we successfully tipped Daniel van Tonder to upset the odds at the Kenya Open at huge 45/1 odds! Check out our betting tips and predictions for the Valero Texas Open below.

Valero Texas Open winner prediction: Abraham Ancer each-way at 18/1

High-class ball-striking tends to be the route to success at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course, which has staged every edition of the Texas Open since 2010. Six of the last seven winners have ranked no worse than fourth from tee to green and that stat looks key again this week.

Step forward Abraham Ancer, the Texas-born Mexican who is based in San Antonio and has the perfect game to tame this layout despite possessing an ordinary record at the course.

Ancer’s Texas Open form figures of 42-58-42 might be modest, but he is a more consistent operator two years on from his last start in this tournament and there was a lot to like about his effort in the WGC-Match Play last week, where only a Viktor Hovland birdie barrage stopped him from going three-from-three in the group stage.

The 30-year-old would go on to lose a playoff against Kevin Streelman but, as a result, he arrives in San Antonio fresher than he might otherwise have been and this looks like a fine chance for him to finally shed his PGA Tour maiden tag ahead of a tilt at the Masters next week.

Valero Texas Open outsider prediction: Chris Kirk each-way at 35/1

Chris Kirk has come back from personal problems to become a serious contender on the PGA Tour again and the four-time winner has every chance in a tournament where he finished eighth in both 2015 and 2018.

Kirk, who ranks 21st in strokes gained tee-to-green on the PGA Tour in 2020-21, and fourth among those taking part this week, bravely retained his tour card with a runners-up finish when playing on a medical exemption at the Sony Open at the beginning of the year.

He boasts excellent Texas form, winning at Colonial in 2015 and coming second in the Houston Open in 2011, and it would be some story were he to seal an 11th-hour Masters invite by claiming this title.
