Could Harry Maguire be the face of the new £50 note?

Born in the south east of Ireland, Simon put his life-long love of football to good use when he started a successful independent blog in 2010. That opened up an alternative route to a career in journalism, and having had work published across a number of sites and publications, Simon joined the staff at Spotlight Sports Group in 2018.

More than 20,000 people have signed a petition to put a picture of Leicester City’s England international Harry Maguire riding an inflatable unicorn on the new £50 note.

The picture, which shows the centre half thoroughly enjoying himself on his inflatable steed, went viral during the summer’s 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The petition was started by Twitter user @JonnyGabriel after the Bank of England asked for the public’s help in choosing someone to feature as “the face” of the new £50 notes, which are set to be released later this year.

In the petition, it reads:

“The Bank of England are redesigning the £50 following the successful redesign of the £5, £10, and £20 notes.

“None of these notes so far have featured a World Cup semi finalist floating on a mythical creature, and in the interests of football’s attempts to come home, who would be more appropriate to feature than Harry Maguire riding an inflatable unicorn?”

The current £50 note features images of steam engine visionaries and prolific manufacturers Matthew Boulton and James Watt on either side, and it feels apt that those industrial revolution pioneers could be followed onto minted paper by a member of England’s latest footballing revolution – Harry Maguire.

Selecting a player who has a fondness for “steaming in” to score from set pieces, would also be a fitting tribute to Boulton and Watt.

With support for the petition starting to swell, the new £50 note featuring a mythological beast on top of a unicorn could flood the nation soon. You add your name to the petition here.
