Best bet – Croatia to win Group D

Croatia reached the semi-finals of back-to-back World Cups in Qatar and topped a Nations League group containing Denmark, France and Austria last year.

There is no one anywhere near that level in their qualification group and they may not have to get out of second gear to get past Wales, Turkey, Armenia and Latvia.

Accusations of an ageing squad are overblown, 18 of their 24-man squad for the first two games are in their 20’s and they still have one of the best midfields in world football.

The Red Dragons are rebuilding in the wake of Gareth Bale’s retirement and Turkey have drawn with Luxembourg and been beaten by the Faroe Islands recently so are easily passed over.

Best bet – England to win Group C

It would appear that England have not been handed the most straightforward of tasks to make the finals in Germany by winning Group C, but there seems more to come from Gareth Southgate’s team.

They come up against Italy, who has demonstrated they can fall foul of the wobbles in missing the last two World Cups and the Three Lions will be fired up to put one over the team who they ran so close in the Euro 2020 final.

Ukraine and North Macedonia will not be a pushover, but I still fancy that England can head to the finals in style.

Best bet – Norway to qualify from Group A

Spain are justified favourites to top Group A but Norway offer value at 4/7 to make a first appearance since 2000 in the European Championships.

In Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard they have two genuinely world-class players in the form of their lives and the two stars of the show have a solid supporting cast. They were narrowly beaten to second place by Turkey in the World Cup qualifiers but should have too much for Scotland, the only other genuine contenders for the qualifying spots in Group A.

Best bet – Northern Ireland to qualify from Group H

Northern Ireland welcome back their greatest ever manager in Michael O’Neil for the upcoming campaign. His first spell with the IFA brought a last 16 exit at Euro 2016 and a play-off place for the World Cup in 2018 and the 2020 Euros.

Ian Baraclough was an underwhelming replacement but under his watch NI finished third in World Cup qualifying behind Switzerland and European champions Italy, even claiming a 0-0 draw against the Italians in Belfast to deny them a spot in Qatar.

O’Neill’s final qualifying campaign saw him push Germany and the Netherlands for a spot at Euro 2020, before he departed for Stoke.

NI are 7/1 to make the top two in Group H, where they are the fourth seeds behind Denmark, Finland and Slovenia. O’Neill has historically made NI better than the sum of their parts and with sellout crowds behind them, Windsor Park will be a tough place to go for every side in the group. They should be capable of pushing Finland and Slovenia for second, so there’s plenty of value in that 7/1.

Best bet – Sweden to win Group F

Group F looks like being one of the most closely fought and Sweden offer real value in their attempts to reach a seventh consecutive European Championship.

Janne Andersson’s men will battle it out with Belgium, who’s golden generation is being split up, and Austria with the Scandinavians available to back at around 6/1 to win the group.

Sweden go into their opening qualifier – at home to the Belgians – unbeaten in their last five matches and Premier League trio Alexander Isak, Dejan Kulusevski and Anthony Elanga could play a significant part in their campaign.

Best bet – Hungary to win Group G

At odds of around 2/1 to top Group G, Hungary offer interest. Hungary caught the eye during the Nations League as they beat England home and away, without conceding a goal, and took four points off Germany. They fell just short of topping the group, finishing one-point shy of Italy, despite most expecting them to suffer relegation.

After a 44-year absence from the European Championships, Hungary returned to the competition in 2016 when they made it through to the last-16 and they also qualified in 2020. The Magyars face Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Lithuania in Group G and look good value to finish at the summit.

Hungary can also draw on a strong record at home in previous Euro qualifying campaigns, losing just one of their last 10 and winning seven times during that sequence.
