Nottingham Forest were one of the ante-post favourites for relegation in the Premier League this season, but Nuno Espirito Santo has defied all expectations in a stunning first half of the season for the Tricky Trees.

Following their 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday, Forest are third in the table with 44 points to their name – eight points more than they earned in the entirety of last season.

With Liverpool only six points ahead of them and a six-point cushion inside the top four, we ask our team of experts where they think the underdogs can finish this term.

While I do think they will have more of a battle on their hands in the second half of the season, odds of 25/1 for a top-four finish still look excellent value to me.

They have already played Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United away from home and have a six-point cushion before dropping out of the top four. The improving form of Manchester City and Newcastle is a concern, but 25/1 is too big to ignore.

Liam Flin

I’d like to see them in the Champions League but I think they may have to settle for sixth spot, which would still represent an incredible season.

Newcastle’s red-hot form is hard to ignore, Manchester City are back in form and Chelsea have the squad depth to cope with the latter stages of the season.

Tom McGarry

Talk of Nottingham Forest ‘doing a Leicester’ is growing but, in truth, if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side can secure European football of any sorts for next season, then that has to go down as a major success.

With so many quality teams hunting them down, Forest’s form may dip over the coming months and they could end up finishing around sixth.

Jamie Griffith

I may be left eating my words, but I’m going to err on the side of caution and say sixth.

Teams will stop playing into their hands soon and their counter-attacks should become less deadly, opening the door for two of Manchester City, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Aston Villa to usurp them – Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are still my picks for the top three.
