Kane and Son on track to become the Premier League's deadliest ever duo

Born in the south east of Ireland, Simon put his life-long love of football to good use when he started a successful independent blog in 2010. That opened up an alternative route to a career in journalism, and having had work published across a number of sites and publications, Simon joined the staff at Spotlight Sports Group in 2018.

Harry Kane and Son-Heung-Min have been performing in pitch-perfect harmony for Tottenham this season, and the devastating double-act’s brand of sporting symbiosis is proving next to impossible for Premier League defences to stop.

In Spurs’ narrow 1-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday evening, the duo collaborated again for the game’s only goal, when Kane flicked a headed centre from a corner towards an advancing and eventually scoring Son.

The South Korean’s effort was his eighth Premier League goal of the season – seven of which were set up by his partner in crime Kane, while Son has already returned the favour twice this term in previous matches.

In total, the increasingly prolific pair have combined to notch nine of Tottenham’s 16 league goals this season between them this season, leaving Son and Kane top of the division’s scorers and assists charts for the campaign respectively.

With their link-up play looking more telepathic by the week, the duo’s numbers look set to swell – but just how far can Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min’s partnership propel Tottenham this season?

The Premier League’s most productive partnerships

Even though we are only six games deep into the new campaign, Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min are already closing in on the Premier League’s record for most goal combinations between two players in a single season.

The current record setters, Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton – whose SAS alliance fired Blackburn to title glory – linked up to produce 13 goals for Rovers during their solitary run to top spot in 1994/95.

Two seasons ago in 2018/19, Bournemouth pair Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson dovetailed to notch 12 goals between them. Newcastle supporters will be hoping to see the ex-Cherries twosome combine to similar effect in the North East this term.

In 2019/20, Wolves dyad Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez bounced off each other to score 10 goals for Wanderers as the campaign’s most in tune attacking pairing – though Son and Kane are now just one goal shy of matching their total.

Longer-term, Son and Kane have an enormous opportunity to etch their names into the annals of Premier League history as the competition’s most potent ever partnership.

With 29 goals, the in-tandem Tottenham stars already rank joint second in the division’s all-time list of in-sync partnerships, and if Kane and Son can link up a further eight times this term, they will overtake former Chelsea icons Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard – who exchanged passes to score 36 times during their time together at Stamford Bridge.

Premier League Golden Boot odds worth backing

Following his eight-goal early season surge, flying South Korean Son-Heung-Min is already chipping away at his career best tally for a single Premier League campaign, which currently sits at 14 from a productive 2016/17 crusade.

The 28-year-old is the division’s current leading marksman, despite averaging just 2.3 shots per appearances since the summer – a figure that places him 26th in the Premier League for that attempts metric.

Son has never come close to challenging for the Golden Boot since moving to Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen five years ago, though his finishing has been clinical enough this term to suggest he’s worth backing at 8/1 to land the gong this time around, especially with bet365 paying out up to four places each way at 1/4 odds.

Kane, currently on five Premier League goals for the season so far, is understandably priced at much shorter odds to win the third Golden Boot of his career, though the Three Lions talisman still looks excellent value at 4/1 to make a push for individual honours in 2020/21.

The 27-year-old’s eye-watering 4.8 average attempts per 90 minutes this season is matched only by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, though Kane will fancy his chances of outscoring his Egyptian rival if he can stay fit for the entire campaign.

Kane and Son to fire Tottenham to new heights?

Led from the front by what is arguably the most lethal partnership in world football right now, Tottenham Hotspur’s aspirations for the 2020/21 season are looking loftier with every Son/Kane link-up.

While Spurs were considered by many to be genuine top-four contenders before the campaign kicked-off, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min’s early displays have made Jose Mourinho’s side the early front runners to finish as “best of the rest” behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

With the peerless predatory powers of their red-hot forwards combined, Tottenham look superb value at 2/1 in the Premier League winners without Liverpool and Man City markets at bet365, while their 5/6 price to finish in Champions League qualification places should also pique your interest as a safer looking option.
