League Two relegation prediction – Accrington Stanley at 11/2
Morecambe and Bromley head the relegation betting from League Two though Accrington Stanley at a bigger price appeal far more.
The Shrimpers have been in crisis for too long but the lifting of a transfer embargo means players can be shifted in and out. And Bromley, buzzing after winning a place in the Football League for the first time, can let the feelgood factor help them stay competitive.
Stanley, however, are going backwards at quite a clip following relegation from League One 15 months back with a 17th-place finish on their return to the basement.
John Doolan’s men lost nine of their last 13 league games and pre-season form, while rarely too important, has been poor.
Doolan’s squad is thin and needs a rebuild after losing last season’s 17-goal top scorer Jack Nolan, who has joined Gillingham, and Tommy Leigh, the top scorer the season before, who has signed for MK Dons.
The Reds will be hoping Jimmy Knowles hits the ground running after a fine scoring season with Boston United, but this is a sizeable step up from the National League North.
Accrington are priced up bigger than a side like Newport County for the drop, and that looks questionable.
League Two top goalscorer betting odds
- Andy Cook – 10/1
- Paddy Madden – 10/1
- Will Grigg – 12/1
- Charlie Wyke – 14/1
- Matthew Denis – 14/1
- Joe Ironside – 16/1
- Will Evans – 16/1
League Two top goalscorer prediction – Callum Hendry each-way at 25/1
Macaulay Langstaff won the Golden Boot honours last term with a fabulous return of 28 goals, which was even more creditable when you consider his Notts County side could only finish 14th.
Langstaff has left the building, jumping two divisions to join Millwall, leaving the likes of Bradford’s Andy Cook and Chesterfield’s Paddy Madden to head the top scorer betting.
They have solid claims given their consistency over the seasons but Callum Hendry is a player who catches the eye at a bigger price.
The son of former Blackburn defender and Scotland international Colin Hendry, 26-year-old Callum has pedigree and potential.
Signed to fill the boots vacated by last season’s top scorer Max Dean, Hendry has scored plenty of goals in the Scottish Premiership with St Johnstone and Aberdeen.
And over the last couple of campaigns, he has also found the net regularly for Salford City in League Two. He managed 12 goals two seasons ago and nine last term, despite only making 17 starts in an injury-ravaged campaign.
In a team as attractive as the Dons, Hendry should get his share of chances and he looks a fair play for top scorer honours.
