Mauritius Open golf tips with 11/1, 25/1 and 80/1 selections

The golfing year concludes with the final DP World Tour tournament of 2023, the Mauritius Open, where last week’s Alfred Dunhill Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen dominates the betting in a weak field at Heritage Golf Club.

Racing & Football Outlook golf expert Joe Champion has been through the field and picked out his best bet as well as two each-way options.

Mauritius Open best bet – Antoine Rozner 11/1

Heritage is a familiar venue which staged this tournament in 2015, 2017 and 2019 but each of those editions took place at La Chateau Golf Course while the 2023 tournament will mark the debut of the newly opened La Reserve Golf Links.

Oosthuizen is a co-designer of La Reserve, billed as the Indian Ocean’s first and only contemporary links, which goes some way to explaining why he’s playing once again with the other big-name South Africans deciding against a trip to Mauritius.

His course knowledge is a significant advantage and he’s the class act in a low-grade field but the 2010 Open winner was battling through injury at the Alfred Dunhill and his chances of contending in back-to-back tournaments will not have been helped by a Monday finish at Leopard Creek.

If Oosthuizen runs out of steam, that could open the door for the French duo of Matthieu Pavon and Antoine Rozner to take advantage with Rozner given the narrow vote over his in-form countryman.

La Reserve, a windswept coastal course, will put added emphasis on accuracy and control of ball flight and Rozner, a rock-solid iron-player who rarely has an off week with his approach play, looks a perfect fit for this test.

The 30-year-old is the defending champion having won at Mont Choisy last season and he’s excelled in his other two appearances in Malaysia, finishing seventh at Anahita in 2018 and a runner-up at the other Heritage course in 2019.

The second of his three DP World Tour victories came in windswept conditions at the 2021 Qatar Masters while he warmed up nicely for this title defence with a 15th-place finish at Leopard Creek, a solid return to after a two-week break.

Mauritius Open each-way bet 1 – Laurie Canter 25/1

Laurie Canter suffered a gut-wrenching playoff loss in the LIV promotions event on Sunday, missing out on a bumper 2024 payday after finding the water at the second extra hole, but his performance, which followed a top-five finish at the Australian Open the previous week, was still a positive one overall.

That playoff loss will be hard to take but the Englishman is a reliable ball-striker who will now be able to refocus on the DP World Tour from this week. He was 16th at the other Heritage course in 2017 and could improve on that at the sister layout this week.

Mauritius Open each-way bet 2 – Sam Bairstow 80/1

Sam Bairstow finished runner-up in the Amateur Championship – played on a links course at Mauritius Open best each-Royal Lytham & St Annes – in 2022 and is a winner on the Challenge Tour this year.

The Englishman went well at the Alfred Dunhill Championship and is worth keeping an eye on at a decent each-way price.
