Switzerland vs Italy
Both teams scored in each of Switzerland’s three group games, while Italy conceded in each of their matches in the next round. Luciano Spalletti’s side are moving towards a more attacking approach than Italian sides of old and they’re rebuilding their defence after some key departures from the international stage. As a result, this one should be a pretty open affair.
Tip: Both teams to score
Germany vs Denmark
Denmark are no pushovers, but hosts Germany are backed to book their place in the next round. The Danes have yet to win a game at this tournament, drawing all three group matches and scoring just twice. Germany have scored eight goals in their first three matches at this tournament and they should have enough to get past Denmark.
Tip: Germany to win
England vs Slovakia
England have underwhelmed in Germany and their lack of attacking flair is a real problem. The Three Lions tend to have very passive spells in games and that’s an issue against Slovakia, who look very good in possession. Slovakia beat Belgium in their opener and they look at their best frustrating better sides, so take them to keep this close at least.
Tip: Slovakia +2 handicap
Spain vs Georgia
Georgia have been involved in some fantastic games at this tournament and they probably should have seen more than eight goals through three games. Spain create plenty of chances but they meet a Georgian side that has scored in every game at this tournament. As a result, back a few goals in a game where Spain can really flex their pace out wide.
Tip: Over 2.5 Goals
France vs Belgium
France slipped to second in their group and their only win from their first three games game via an own goal. After they were frustrated by Poland in their last match, the French are worth opposing. Belgium are talented and their opening game slip against Slovakia is something they moved beyond, with better performances against Romania and Ukraine. Three of France’s last four games have fished level, including two 0-0 draws, so there’s reason to believe the Red Devils can frustrate them.
Tip: Belgium double chance
Portugal vs Slovenia
Portugal’s first-choice back four posted some strong underlying numbers in their opening two games and they’re expected to make things tough for a goal-shy Slovenia outfit. At the other end, Portugal are the best attacking side that Slovenia have encountered in Germany so far and the talent around Cristiano Ronaldo can make the difference in a comfortable win.
Tip: Portugal -1 handicap
Romania vs Netherlands
Romania scored four goals in the group stage and their Expected Goals numbers point to them consistently creating chances. Meanwhile, this Dutch side has looked good in the final third but they’ve been poor defensively. Their set piece issues is an area for Romania to target, while the Dutch lost 3-2 to Austria in their last game.
Tip: Both teams to score
Austria vs Turkey
Austria beat Turkey 6-1 in a friendly back in March and they can secure a quarter-final place. Ralf Rangnick’s side have really impressed at this tournament so far and they’ve won eight of their last 10 games. That loss was one of Turkey’s four defeats in seven games this year, so take Austria to win in 90 minutes.
