September is nearly upon us and there are some huge events coming up across the world of sport.  We’ve pulled together our teams of experts and together we’ve put together a huge 44/1 accumulator ahead of an action packed month.

There are some huge events next month with the US Open gripping the tennis world, two big boxing fights and the return of the NFL!

FST’s Month in Sport accumulator

Tennis

US Open – Monday, 29th August – Sunday, 11th September

Joe Champion: With Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic absent, Rafael Nadal is the final member of the big three still standing in New York and the 22-time Grand Slam champion can pull further clear of his greatest rivals by winning number 23 in the Big Apple.

Nadal comes into the US Open with question marks over his fitness but his credentials on the biggest stage are hard to dispute. He’s won the Australian Open and the French Open already in 2022 and he is unbeaten in Slams having withdrawn from Wimbledon at the semi-final stage.

His comeback in Cincinnati – a three-set defeat against Borna Coric – looked underwhelming at the time but the Croat went on to win the title. With a decent draw, Nadal has the chance to hit top gear by the second week.

Tip: Rafael Nadal to win at 7/2

Boxing

Andy Ruiz Jr vs Luiz Ortiz – Saturday, September 4

Gareth Freeman: Former heavyweight world champion Andy Ruiz Jr returns to the ring on September 4 with a tough match-up against veteran Luiz Ortiz in Los Angeles.

Ortiz has lost just twice in his professional career and both of those defeats came at the hands of Deontay Wilder when challenging for the WBC belt. Ruiz Jr has also only lost in world title fights, via a majority decision when battling for the then vacant WBO strap against Joseph Parker and then in a rematch against Anthony Joshua.

Ruiz Jr is the heavy favourite but this fight looks far closer than the odds suggest and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Ortiz emerged triumphant. The odds against price on the fight to go the full distance has real appeal, however, as Ruiz has never been stopped and Ortiz has only failed to go the distance against Wilder – who may just have the most powerful punch in the history of boxing.

Interestingly, both of these fighters picked themselves off the canvas to win their last fights and given how durable both of these men are I’m expecting this one to go the full 12 rounds.

Tip: Fight to go the distance – yes at 6/4

NFL

Buffalo Bills at LA Rams – Friday, 9th September

Chris Rivers: The 2022 NFL season is potentially beginning at the end by starting with a clash between two serious Super Bowl contenders.

The Buffalo Bills are the ante-post favourites for the Lombardi trophy, silverware that’s currently in the possession of the Los Angeles Rams, who are 11-1 shots to retain their prize.

Although they are the defending champs and have home advantage, the Rams are 2.5-point underdogs against a strong Bills side with LA expected to become just the fourth team in the last 12 years to lose the NFL’s curtain-raiser having won the Super Bowl the previous year.

However, it doesn’t seem all that easy to pick a winner between these two and a play on the points line holds more appeal.

Both sides are stacked on offence with the Rams boasting Cooper Kupper and Allen Robinson, while the Bills are quarterbacked by MVP favourite Josh Allen. The two sides shared 67 points when they last met two years ago so over 52 looks achievable.

Tip: Over 52 points at 10/11

Boxing

Saul Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin – Saturday, 17th September

Gareth Freeman: Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin meet for the third time on September 17 in Las Vegas in what should be another close contest.

The first meeting was judged as a draw, while Canelo won the rematch by a majority decision in what was a more entertaining affair as both fighters landed some big punches.

There is no love lost between these two fighters and Canelo, 32, has his super middleweight titles on the line. The Mexican has stressed he intends to knock ‘GGG’ out in this trilogy bout and I am expecting him to win, but it may take the judges to decide who is the victor.

Canelo comes into the clash on the back of a loss to Dmitrii Bivol at light heavyweight, while GGG’s has only lost to his opponent and managed to stand up against some huge shots – particularly in the second meeting.

Both of these fighters boast impressive knockout percentages (Canelo 64%, GGG 84%) but both are also incredibly durable. Golovkin is now 40 and it remains to be seen how much longer he can continue at the top level, but even after making a slow start against Ryota Murata in his last outing he never looked in any real trouble and he should be able to go the distance. Canelo is the younger of the two and should be able to do enough to convince the judges to award him the win, but once again we should see another very close battle between two exceptional boxers.

Tip: Alvarez to win by Decision or Technical Decision at 11/10
