Next England Manager Odds: Who are the contenders?
Sports Journalist at FST, Gareth qualified as a journalist after graduating from university and spent over a decade as a freelance broadcast journalist, commentator and tipster before joining FST. Now living in Manchester, he is a long suffering Bolton Wanderers fan who also enjoys boxing, the NBA, tennis and rugby league.
The search has begun for a new England boss following Gareth Southgate’s resignation and there are already plenty of names in the frame.
The FA don’t necessarily need to rush an appointment as the next game is not until September, a Nations League game against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, and the qualification campaign for the World Cup in 2026 doesn’t begin until March.
Using bet365 for the prices, I’ve looked over the current odds and had a run through a few of the candidates to weigh up the likelihood of them stepping in to fill the void created by Southgate’s departure.

Howe an understandable favourite
The Three Lions have hired foreign managers previously, with Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello both having stints in the hot seat, but if they want to go with an English manager then Eddie Howe is the standout pick.
Howe guided Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League across two spells with the club and is now in charge of Newcastle United.
A brief and unsuccessful spell at Burnley is the only blemish on Howe’s CV, although he hasn’t managed to win a major piece of silverware either.
Howe would probably be a popular choice among the fans but convincing Newcastle to allow him to depart could potentially prove problematic.
Klopp has the pedigree
A little further down the betting, Jurgen Klopp would be a huge coup if the FA could convince him to make a swift return to management.
Klopp won pretty much every prize on offer during an incredible spell at Anfield and his attacking brand of football would surely go down well with an English public who grew frustrated with Southgate’s pragmatic approach during the Euros.
There are some sections of the England fanbase who would prefer an English boss, and in any case Klopp may not be open to approaches just yet after citing a desire to take a break from the game after leaving Liverpool.
Former Chelsea quartet in the mix
Four former Chelsea managers are in the running with Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel considered contenders.
Potter’s reputation took a knock at Stamford Bridge but his work at Brighton prior to that was impressive and at one stage he was heavily touted as a potential future England manager.
Lampard impressed in his first managerial role at Derby then had a few good periods in his first stint at Chelsea but since then he has been sacked by Everton after a year in charge before a disappointing and forgettable caretaker spell back at Stamford Bridge, and taking charge of England at this point doesn’t seem particularly likely for the former midfielder.
Potter is a 3/1 chance, Pochettino is priced at 10/1 and Lampard is 12/1 but the outsider of the four is the most interesting option here as 20/1 shot Thomas Tuchel is keen on the role according to various reports.
The German was apparently under consideration to take charge of England after the World Cup in 2022 before the FA decided to keep the faith with Southgate. Tuchel has won the Champions League and titles in France and Germany, although he left Bayern Munich at the end of last season after a campaign without silverware.
