Super Bowl LVII predictions
Super Bowl LVII best bet – Philadelphia Eagles -1.5 Point Spread
Five years on from lifting a first Lombardi Trophy, the Philadelphia Eagles are back in the Super Bowl, albeit with different faces at the two most important positions, head coach and quarterback.
One thing that is the same as five years ago is the team’s dominant play in the trenches, boasting arguably the league’s best offensive line as well as a pass rush that is challenging the 1985 Chicago Bears for the most sacks in a season (playoffs included)
On the other side, the Chiefs will be in their third Super Bowl of the Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes era, with this a poignant game for Reid, who for 14 years was in the big chair in Philadelphia and took them to a Super Bowl in 2004, losing to the Patriots.
Experience, or lack thereof, could count for a lot, or so the Chiefs will be hoping, with the bright lights and fanfare of Super Bowl week, from added media availability to unusual schedule and prolonged half-time all something new for Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, who hasn’t exactly impressed since returning from a shoulder sprain in Week 18, throwing just two touchdowns and an interception in three games, all of them wins.
The Eagles tend to throw to set up the run, but behind their hulking offensive line and with a less than 100 per cent Hurts, expect them to lean on their bread and butter and pound the rock in this one, something Hurts is a key part of with his legs perhaps the x-factor in this match up.
Few teams stop the run better than the 49ers, but even they got worn down in the NFC title game and there’s nothing to suggest Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell, who has thrived this postseason, and Hurts will be slowed by the Chiefs run D.
When the Chiefs have the ball on offense, the Eagles will need every bit of the depth along their defensive line in order to prevent Mahomes from winning a second Super Bowl, with the league MVP no doubt eager to banish the memories of their last appearance two years ago when blown off the field by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a game in which Mahomes was running for his life behind a patchwork offensive line.
Whilst things aren’t expected to be that bad for Mahomes this time around, he still likely won’t be at 100 percent, three weeks after suffering a high ankle sprain, and will be confronted by a relentless pass rush unlike any other he has faced all season.
The Chiefs can’t afford to get off to a sluggish start (scored just 16 first half points combined in their previous Super Bowl’s under Mahomes), as the Eagles a dominant team who will squeeze the life out of an opponent when getting out to an early lead, but unfortunately for them the Eagles scored the most first half points of all 32 teams this season,
It’s the might of Mahomes versus the most complete team in the league, and the Eagles are expected to come out on top.
Super Bowl LVII MVP prediction – Jalen Hurts
Philadelphia Eagles may be the complete team but the quarterback is still the star of the show when it comes to the Super Bowl MVP. Four of the last six Super Bowl MVPs have been the quarterback of the winning team and if you look back even further that record stretches to nine of the last 13. With the Eagles tipped to lift the Lombardi Trophy, Jalen Hurts is a fine bet for the MVP award.
