Aston Villa 1 – 2 Swansea

Two of the Premier League’s most out of form sides met in a clash which saw both managers supposedly under pressure to keep their job.

Aston Villa went ahead through a swift counter attack which ended with Jordan Ayew heading into the Swansea net 15 minutes in to the second half. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free kick levelled things five minutes later for the visitors though. It was Ayew who struck again next, but not Jordan Ayew. His brother Andre Ayew sidefooted home a late winner for the visitors.

This loss has led to manager Tim Sherwood being sacked by Aston Villa, and they are now on the hunt for a new manager to try and stave off relegation and instil some sort of belief into the players. Swansea’s first win in six games moves their points tally to 13 after ten games.

Leicester 1 – 0 Crystal Palace

An uncharacteristically dull game between two of the Premier League’s in form sides ended with the home side taking all three points thanks to none other than Jamie Vardy.

The striker took advantage of Brede Hangelaand’s error an hour into the game to slam the ball in from inside the six yard box. This has seen him join an elite group of players who have scored in seven successive Premier League games such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Alan Shearer, and Thierry Henry. Apart from this it was a fairly lifeless affair, but Leicester will have been happy to keep a rare clean sheet.

Leicester have kept pace with the top four in the Premier League with this win. They are just one point behind Manchester United and now see some clear daylight between them and the rest of the pack. Palace move down to 7th.

Norwich 0 – 1 West Brom

A dogged West Brom secured the points at Carrow Road to put a bit of pressure on the newly promoted Norwich.

Norwich came into this game on the back of a humiliating 6-2 defeat to Newcastle last weekend, and they really needed to win this game with matches against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea coming up. But they couldn’t finish the chances they created, and it was eventually another Salomon Rondon header that sealed the points for a defensively sound West Brom.

This has seen West Brom move up to 10th in the table, whilst Norwich remain down in 16th place with nine points from their opening ten games.

Stoke 0 – 2 Watford

A double of first Premier League goals for Watford players allowed them to take advantage of an unusually poor defensive display by Stoke on Saturday.

Watford captain Troy Deeney managed to get a long awaited first Premier League goal with his 25th attempt on goal this season. It was none other than Odion Ighalo who provided for Deeney, and he followed it up with another assist for Ahmed Abdi 20 minutes from time. This made it five goals and two assists for Ighalo in Watford’s last seven goals. The summer signings Joselu and Shaqiri were worse than ineffectual in this match, but it was Stoke’s defensive display that was really surprising. They failed to deal with Watford time and time again and Mark Hughes will be livid at his back line’s attempts after a number of good defensive displays.

This moves Watford up to 13th position in the Premier League, with Stoke slipping below them thanks to this defeat to 14th place.

West Ham 2 – 1 Chelsea

Chelsea’s poor season continued as they lost at Upton Park on Saturday as a number of the Chelsea contingent received red cards.

Mauro Zarate opened the scoring 17 minutes in as he capitalised on a botched corner clearance to rifle in from the edge of the box. The controversy came towards the end of the first half as Nemanja Matic received a second yellow card. The Chelsea team were incensed, with Cesc Fabregas getting booked for dissent and the assistant manager being sent to the stands. Jose Mourinho followed at the break as he unleashed a barrage of abuse at the referee. Gary Cahill levelled for the Blues ten minutes after half time, but substitute Andy Carroll headed in the winner for West Ham.

This was Chelsea’s 5th loss of the Premier League season already and they are now in 15th position after ten games. West Ham rise to 3rd position after Manchester United failed to win in the derby on Sunday.

Arsenal 2 – 1 Everton

A quickfire double from Arsenal sent them briefly to the top of the table in Saturday’s late kickoff as they continued their good run of form with a win over Everton.

It was a cagey affair for much of the first half, but Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock with a header ten minutes before the break. Laurent Koscielny added a second with another header two minutes later. Ross Barkley saw his deflected shot nestle in the back of the net just before half-time, but it turned out to be in vain. Romelu Lukaku wasted a rare Everton chance to level, and then Gareth Barry was sent off in injury time.

This sent Arsenal to the top of the table ahead of Manchester City’s derby game on Sunday, but the point City gained sent them back to the summit. Arsenal trail on goal difference. Everton drop to 11th after their loss.

Sunderland 3 – 0 Newcastle

Sunderland managed to get a much needed win over their north east rivals Newcastle to drag them off the bottom of the Premier League table.

The scoreline certainly didn’t reflect the way the game played out. Newcastle dominated for the vast majority of the first half, but Sunderland claimed a controversial penalty just before half time which also resulted in Fabricio Coloccini being unfairly dismissed. Adam Johnson netted the spot kick amid torrents of abuse from the travelling fans. Costel Pantilimon denied Aleksander Mitrovic before Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher sealed a somewhat undeserved victory for Sunderland.

This was Sunderland’s 6th consecutive win over Newcastle, a record for them, and sent them above Newcastle on goal difference up to 18th. Newcastle slip one position to 19th after Aston Villa also lost.

Manchester United 0 – 0 Manchester City

A drab Manchester derby saw both Manchester United and Manchester City leave with a share of the spoils as the visitors moved back to the top of the Premier League.

Both teams seemed to lack a creative spark, with only the odd penetrating run or pass coming from Anthony Martial and Kevin de Bruyne. The best chance of the game fell to substitute Jesse Lingard as he hit the bar before Chris Smalling forced a rare save out of Joe Hart. Other than that, not much happened at all.

This failure to win saw Manchester United remain in 4th position after West Ham overtook them on Saturday, whilst the point sends City back to the top of the table on goal difference.

Bournemouth 1 – 5 Tottenham Hotspur

An early Bournemouth goal ultimately counted for nothing as Tottenham Hotspur thrashed the newly promoted side.

Matt Ritchie managed to get a shot away from inside the box under a minute into the game to put Bournemouth ahead. It didn’t stay this way for long though as Harry Kane and Moussa Dembele put the visitors back in front before the 20 minute mark had passed. Erik Lamela tapped in from close range half an hour in to extend Spurs’ lead. Kane added two more after the break to mark his return to goalscoring form and make this victory as emphatic as could be hoped.

Spurs’ 9th successive unbeaten Premier League game puts them in 16th position after ten games, whilst Bournemouth’s loss sends them down to 17th position, just two points above the relegation zone.

Liverpool 1 – 1 Southampton

A late equaliser for Southampton left new Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp without a win in three matches as Liverpool once again struggled to perform.

Liverpool dominated possession throughout the match but only managed to get two of their 15 shots on target, and it took until the 77th minute for Christian Benteke to head a James Milner cross home. Sadio Mane had a stroke of good fortune nine minutes later when he scrambled the ball across the line after Simon Mignolet palmed it out to the forward. The hero turned slight villain a few minutes later as he picked up two late yellow cards to get dismissed in injury time.

Jurgen Klopp has stamped a distinctive style on his new Liverpool squad, but all the tight pressing on the opposition can’t seem to be converted into goals at the other end. His 3rd draw in a row puts Liverpool in 9th position, whilst Southampton’s point puts them in 8th.
