Tottenham Hotspur 4 – 1 Manchester City

Manchester City threw away a 1-0 lead at Spurs in Saturday’s early game to lose their second Premier League game in a row, and their third loss in four games in all competitions.

Summer signing Kevin De Bruyne slotted home after 25 minutes to put the league leaders in front, but Eric Dier’s long range effort 45 minutes in levelled the scored. Toby Alderweireld, Harry Kane, and Erik Lamela then had a second half to remember as they put Manchester City to the sword.

The linesmen have a lot to answer for though. De Bruyne’s opener was marginally offside, and then Kyle Walker was a mile offside as he helped set up Dier’s equaliser. Harry Kane was also in an offside position as he put his side 3-1 up.

This loss put Man City’s lead at the top of the Premier League into jeopardy, and Manchester United capitalised on that later in the day to leapfrog their neighbours at the top. Spurs were lifted to 6th with their victory.

Leicester 2 – 5 Arsenal

Arsenal came from behind against the formerly unbeaten Leicester as an Alexis Sanchez hat trick helped them towards an emphatic victory.

A neat finish from Jamie Vardy in the 13th minute put the in form Leicester ahead against Arsenal, but an Arsenal counter attack five minutes later ended with Theo Walcott putting the ball in the net. Alexis Sanchez stole the show after this, putting Arsenal ahead after half an hour and adding two more in the second half. Jamie Vardy grabbed a second goal late on before Olivier Giroud rounded off the win with a 90th minute goal.

This has lifted Arsenal to 4th in the Premier League table, and they are only three points behind Manchester United at the top of the league. Leicester are still in a very respectable 8th position.

Liverpool 3 – 2 Aston Villa

An early goal from James Milner set Liverpool up to claim a crucial victory after a rough couple of weeks against the struggling Aston Villa.

It took just over a minute for Milner to fire in from just outside the box against his former club, but it was the return of Daniel Sturridge to the scoresheet stole the headlines. A brilliant volley with the outside of his boot put Liverpool two up on the hour and got Sturridge his first goal since March. But Rudy Gestede managed to pull one back seven minutes later, before Sturridge played a neat exchange with Phillipe Coutinho a minute later and calmly slotted home. Gestede got another a few minutes later to make it a nervy finish for Liverpool, but they held on for their first victory in seven games.

This win took Liverpool up to 7th in the table, but Brendan Rodgers’ future is still in the balance. They struggled a bit against Villa, and with games against Everton, Spurs, and Southampton coming up they will still have to improve. Villa drop into the relegation zone with their loss, and they will be starting to worry now.

Manchester United 3 – 0 Sunderland

Manchester United moved to the top of the table with a comfortable win over the dreadful Sunderland on Saturday.

Memphis Depay managed to grab his first ever Premier League goal on the stroke of half time when he latched on to Juan Mata’s precise cutback. They came out firing in the second half, and under a minute had passed before Anthony Martial set up Wayne Rooney to scramble it home for their second goal. Juan Mata rounded off the victory with a late goal from an Ashley Young cross. Anthony Martial may have failed to get his 5th Man Utd goal on Saturday, but his excellent hold up play and assist for Rooney proved that there is even more to be expected from his game.

This victory lifted Manchester United to the top of the table after Man City lost earlier in the day, meanwhile Dick Advocaat’s Sunderland remain at the bottom of the table with just two points.

Southampton 3 – 1 Swansea

Southampton took advantage of a faltering Swansea to ease to a comfortable win at St Mary’s on Satuday.

Summer signing Virgil Van Dijk got ahead of Bafetimbi Gomis at the near post to head home after 11 minutes. Dusan Tadic was then credited with a goal after his cross cannoned off Ki Sung-Yeung and into the net ten minutes after half time. Sadio Mane slotted into the back of the net shortly after to put the game beyond Swansea, although Sigurdsson did convert a penalty late on to reduce the impact on their goal difference.

This made it three games without a win for Swansea, and despite Southampton’s poor start to the season they have now drawn level with the Welsh side on nine points. Andre Ayew, Jefferson Montero, and Gomis were scintillating earlier in the season, but they seem to have gone off the boil recently and went missing for much of the game on Saturday.

Stoke 2 – 1 Bournemouth

Stoke managed to grab their first three points of the season as they beat a Bournemouth side who will now be reeling from the loss of their in form striker.

Jon Walters put the hosts ahead after converting a Marko Arnautovic cross half an hour into the game. This came after Callum Wilson suffered a serious knee injury early in the game, an injury which now looks set to keep him out of action for six months. It didn’t seem bad at first, ambling off the pitch before coming back into the fray, but under a minute later his leg collapsed underneath him and he was stretchered off. Dan Gosling’s deflected shot cheered the travelling Bournemouth fans up though as he drew them level, but a header from Mame Biram Diouf with under ten minutes left gave Stoke the win.

This win lifted Stoke out of the relegation zone and up to 17th, but there will be a real worry about Bournemouth’s chances of survival now. Callum Wilson will be out for around six months, and they have already lost Tyrone Mings and Max Gradel for the majority of the season.

West Ham 2 – 2 Norwich

An entertaining game at Upton Park ended dramatically as West Ham snatched a late equaliser after Norwich had scored what they thought was the winner.

Robbie Brady took advantage of some shoddy defending from Mark Noble nine minutes in to finish calmly and put the visitors ahead, but Diafra Sakho sidefooted in to level things before half time. Nathan Redmond rounded off a good game with a late goal that looked to have won it for Norwich, but Cheikhou Kouyate equalised in the 90th minute to earn the Hammers a point.

This leaves West Ham in an impressive 3rd position after three excellent away results, but their total of just four points from three home games is a bit of a worry for those with a season ticket to Upton Park. Norwich sit in 12th position with nine points from their opening seven games, and they definitely look capable of staying up this season.

Newcastle 2 – 2 Chelsea

Newcastle let a two goal lead slip against the Premier League champions to remain winless this season, but it was a much improved performance from the home side.

Ayoze Perez took advantage of a Kurt Zouma mistake shortly before half time to put Newcastle ahead against the struggling champions, and new signing Georginio Wijnaldum doubled their lead after an hour with his second headed goal of the season. But a late flurry from Chelsea denied Newcastle from claiming victory, with Ramires and William scoring from long range in the last 11 minutes of play.

Newcastle were a much improved side on Saturday, and there was a hint of belief in the squad that has been absent for much of the season so far. Chelsea had a lot of possession, but with Diego Costa suspended they couldn’t seem to do anything positive with the ball, and it was only thanks to some good luck that they managed to get a point from this game. They are still languishing in 14th in the league.

Watford 0 – 1 Crystal Palace

A drab match was settled in a drab fashion as Yohann Cabaye scored a second half penalty to continue their good start to the season.

There isn’t much to say about this match. Crystal Palace’s wingers caused the Watford defence a couple of problems, and it was Wilfried Zaha coming in off the left who won the penalty for Cabaye to convert. Watford hit the bar from a free kick, but that was about it as far as attacking threat goes from the home side.

Palace deserved the win here on Sunday, and the result sees their points tally go up to 12 from seven games, leaving them in 7th position. Watford are in 13th position, and despite their excellent attack last season currently hold the joint lowest scoring record this season.

West Brom 2 – 3 Everton

A thrilling second half comeback from Everton resulted in them taking three points off an unusually poor West Brom defence.

Saido Berahino put the hosts in front and proved that he still has the killer instinct in front of goal, and Craig Dawson doubled their lead ten minutes after half time with a header. But this must have angered Romelu Lukaku, who proceeded to take the game by the scruff of it’s neck. He headed in just a minute later to put Everton back in the game, and he set up Arouna Kone to fire in the equaliser 20 minutes later. Lukaku then gave Gerard Deulofeu his second assist of the game when he slotted home from close range to give Everton the lead with six minutes remaining.

This result lifts Everton into 5th position in the league, with West Brom being bumped down to 15th place.
