Rafael Nadal Wins Record-Extending 35th Masters Title in Montreal

It was another week to remember for Rafael Nadal in Canada, as the Spaniard got his hands on a 5th Rogers Cup and a record-extending 35th Masters title.

Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, and our pre-tournament 2/1 pick to win the title in Montreal, and he didn’t let us down! However, Nadal didn’t have it all his own way, and here was his route to the 2019 Rogers Cup title.

Second Round – Rafael Nadal beat Daniel Evans 7-6 6-4

After receiving a bye to the second round, due to being a top eight seed, Nadal got the better of the inform Dan Evans in straight-sets. However, it wasn’t as comfortable as he would’ve liked, with Nadal having to come from 3-1 down in the opening set, as well as saving two set points at 6-4 down in the opening set tie-break. As expected, Nadal raised his game to win the next four points of the tie-break, before brushing off some minor setbacks in the second set to get the job done. It wasn’t vintage Nadal, but he was still too strong for Evans on this occasion.

Third Round – Rafael Nadal beat Guido Pella 6-3 6-4

Nadal has always matched up well against Guido Pella, and this match proved to be no different. The Spanish ace was more comfortable in this match than he was against Evans, which was helped by the fact he got a lot more of his first serves in, 75% of them to be precise. The top seed was never in any serious trouble at any stage of this match, and despite a couple of lapses of concentration, Nadal eased to his 4th successive straight-sets victory over Guido Pella.

Quarter-Final – Rafael Nadal beat Fabio Fognini 2-6 6-1 6-2

Rafael Nadal exacted revenge for his defeat to Fognini in Monte-Carlo earlier this year, as he came from a set down to get the better of his Italian opponent. Despite the first set score line suggesting Nadal was comfortably outplayed, Nadal himself could’ve quite easily been 3-0 to begin with. Despite the disappointment of losing the opening set, Nadal just raised his game an extra level, which proved to be far more than enough to get the better of Fognini, who appeared to be carrying an injury throughout the match. It once again wasn’t vintage Nadal, but he found a way to win, which he so often does.

Semi-Final – Rafael Nadal beat Gael Monfils by Walkover

For just the 9th time in his career, Nadal received a walkover victory in the semi-finals. The Spaniard was set to take on Gael Monfils, but unfortunately for the Frenchman, a gruelling quarter-final match with Roberto Bautista-Agut took too much out of him, and he was forced to pull out ahead of this semi-final.

Final – Rafael Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-0

In what was undoubtedly his best performance of the tournament, Nadal taught Medvedev a tennis lesson on Sunday, as the Spaniard cruised to the title in just 70 minutes. The match actually started off competitively, as Nadal saved a break point in an epic nine-minute opening game. However, that would prove to be Medvedev’s only chance in the whole match, as Nadal proceeded to beat Medvedev into submission. Nadal won 82% of points behind his first serve, while he won a much improved 67% of points behind his second serve.

In the end, Nadal’s big match experience proved to be the difference between these two, as while he upped his performance levels for the final, Medvedev couldn’t find his best game when it mattered most.

We expected Nadal to raise his game in the final, and so we predicted he’d win by a 2-0 score line. We also thought he’d be comfortable, and so we also backed him to win with a -3.5 Game Handicap, which he easily did.

Accumulator Winners

It wasn’t just Rafael Nadal that brought us success throughout the Rogers Cup, as we also managed to land two accumulators throughout the week. We landed both a 9/1 Tennis Accumulator on Tuesday, as well as a 9/1 Tennis Accumulator on Thursday!
