Scottish Premiership 2022/23 outright predictions & tips

Celtic won the Scottish Premiership title last season by just four points but their huge goal difference showed just how dominant they can be at times. Now, Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will look to reclaim the league title from the side that have won it ten of the last 11 seasons.

Ahead of the start of the season on Saturday, 30th July, I’m taking a look at the Scottish Premiership outright markets, picking a winner, top goalscorer and a team to be relegated.

Scottish Premiership 2022/23 outright predictions & tips

Scottish Premiership outright winner prediction – Celtic at 8/13

Celtic started slowly last season, giving a big head-start to Rangers but after the Christmas break they came to life and never looked back. They scored a huge 92 goals last term and conceded just 22, bettering Rangers’ goal difference by 21 in the end.

The Bhoys haven’t lost any of their starters this summer and have reinforced the squad with the signings of Alexandro Bernabéi, Moritz Jenz and Aaron Mooy. Rangers, meanwhile, have lost key players in Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo and are yet to bring in suitable replacements in those positions.

With Ange Postecoglou having one more year of experience and both Rangers and Celtic having European football to contend with, I am giving the edge to the stronger squad in Celtic.

Scottish Premiership top goalscorer prediction – Giorgos Giakoumakis at 6/1

Giakoumakis finished as joint-top goalscorer last season with 13 goals but it’s noteworthy that he made 16 fewer appearances than Regan Charles-Cook. He had the best goals-per-90 minutes ratio of those in the top 20, averaging 1.11 goals-per-90, some way ahead of Kemar Roofe at 0.90.

His biggest competition this season will come from his teammate Kyogo Furuhashi, who is the betting favourite at 3/1, but with so many games to be played in the Champions League and other cup competitions we think Giakoumakis can finish at the top of the league scoring chart once again.

Scottish Premiership relegation prediction – St Mirren at 10/3

St Mirren enjoyed a pretty steady season last year as they finished a comfortable ninth but this season could be a bit more difficult for The Saints.

They have lost manager Jim Goodwin to Aberdeen and replaced him with Stephen Robison, who joins from Morecambe after a very average season in League One.

I think with those changes and the Scottish Premiership being in such a competitive state in the bottom half of the table, St Mirren could be the team to face the drop this season.
