AC Milan to win Serie A at 5/1
Four different champions in the past four seasons has brought Serie A back to the attention of punters seeking some ante-post value and they may find there is more to be had by backing Milan to claim the Scudetto this time around.
The Rossoneri are one of three sides to have climbed to the top of the mountain since Juventus’ run of nine successive championships was brought to an end, along with Inter and last season’s winners Napoli.
The Neapolitans made a mockery of their 19-1 pre-season title odds, clinching their first Scudetto in 33 years by 16 points
But hanging on to that prize might prove tricky, especially after manager Luciano Spalletti departed and was replaced by Rudi Garcia.
Defensive rock Min-jae Kim has also gone and while they have retained the services of topscorer Victor Osimhen, they are second-favourites to win Serie A, behind Inter.
But the Nerazzurri look a bit short having lost a large chunk of the squad that helped them reach the Champions League final, including Andre Onana, Marcelo Brozovic, Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku.
The sizeable turnover of players is one red flag, as is their tally of 12 losses last season, the most among the top-eight.
Last season’s runners-up Lazio up have also lost some key players, most notably Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, while off-field turmoil at Juventus and a lack of investment at Roma cast doubt over their abilities to challenge.
That brings us to Milan, who finished last season strongly to secure Champions League qualification and have spent that extra money, plus funds raised by selling Sandro Tonali, to make some eye-catching signings.
Christian Pulisic, Samuel Chukwueze, Tijjani Reijnders, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Noah Okakor have all arrived at the San Siro, while last season’s topscorer Rafael Leao is sticking around after choosing to sign an extension.
A few defensive reinforcements wouldn’t go amiss but there’s enough at Milan for boss Stefano Pioli, who masterminded their 2021/22 Scuetto, to make a run at the title.
At the bottom of Serie A, Hellas Verona’s time may be up after surviving the drop via a relegation playoff last season.
Frosinone, Genoa and Cagliari have also come up from Serie B and the latter of those two sides look capable of hanging around, pushing Verona closer to the drop.
Verona haven’t replaced the likes of Ivan Ilic or Giovanni Simeone and new boss Marco Baroni, who barely kept Lecce up last season, is unlikely to have much more success than his predecessor in keeping the Mastiffs out of a relegation dogfight.
