As the new Serie A season draws near, excitement is building for the sides shaping up to challenge Juventus. Both Inter Milan and Napoli have kicked on, hoping to take advantage of any bedding in period for Maurizio Sarri. While the new Juve boss has a reputation for great football, his lack of silverware suggests this could be a major risk for the side who have won the last eight Italian titles.

With AC Milan still in trouble financially, this is a make or break year for four Serie A giants. Meanwhile, Roma and Lazio looking to regroup and Atalanta hope to build on their outstanding success last season, so we expect a thrilling year in the Italian top flight. We’re looking at the best bets from top to bottom in Serie A this season.

Serie A Winners Prediction – Inter Milan

With Sarri in at Juventus, we don’t expect them to be the dominant force of old. His squad doesn’t appear to gel with his style of play, while Sarri will never alter his approach. It’s hard to say any area of this Juve squad fits with Sarrismo. This is a major overhaul from the sustained period of success started by Antonio Conte. It would be fitting if it was Conte who managed to bring it to an end.

Conte arrives at Inter Milan this summer with the club possessing a strong squad that underperformed last season. However, Conte isn’t just a proven winner – he’s a man who has resurrected clubs in the past. He took Juve from seventh to first, pulling off a 28 point swing. He almost doubled Chelsea’s points tally in a year, taking them from 10th to the title.

Arguably, Inter is an easier job, given that they finished fourth. They were 21 points off Juve, but the Old Lady massively overperformed. Last season, Juve’s expected points total was the fourth-highest in Serie A. Despite that, Allegri put them 11 points clear of the rest. They pulled off wins with a functional approach, which isn’t something you can say of Sarri’s first seasons at Chelsea or Napoli.

Given Conte’s ability for radical improvement and the potential regression from Juve’s bold managerial appointment, we see the title race opening up. After three years of moving forward, Inter seem ready for a title push, so we’re backing them to win the title.

Serie A Top 4 Prediction – AC Milan

AC Milan were a whisker away from finally returning to the Champions League last season. They finished in fifth, just a point shy of third. However, the Rossoneri did spend most of the season in the top four. Overall the campaign was considered a failure, with boss Gennaro Gattuso paying the price. However, the summer has brought renewed optimism back to the San Siro.

A strong couple of months have left the Rossoneri in pole position to take fourth. They’ve been busy in the transfer market once again, adding strength around the pitch. They’ve brought in Sampdoria’s Marco Giampaolo to replace Gattuso. He has shown steady progression during his time as a manager, while he’s now ready to step up to the next level.

The good news for Giampaolo is that Milan have made a masterstroke deal with UEFA. Under threat of serious FFP punishments, they’ve managed to negotiate a deal which allows them to keep spending, but they miss out on the Europa League this term. We know how Thursday night football can hurt a side’s top-four ambitions. In recent seasons the new face in the top four has made the most of a light schedule. In 2016/17 Inter had no European football distracting them, while Atalanta’s August exit from the Europa League last term turned out to be a blessing in disguise during last season’s third-place finish.

Milan have strengthened enough to close the small gap to the Champions League spots, while their freshness will be a huge advantage over their main rivals. We expect this to finally be the year which sees Milan return to Serie A’s top four.

Serie A Top 10 Prediction – Sampdoria

Finally, we’re looking at a side who will be prioritising stability this term. It’s all change at Sampdoria, who have changed manager and are likely to change owner. Despite that, they are a side who can solidify a spot in the top 10 this term. While they lost Marco Giampaolo to Milan, they’ve pulled off a coup replacing him with Eusebio Di Francesco.

While his Roma spell ended badly, EDF did take them to the Champions League semi-finals last year. He managed to get the Roma job off a strong spell at Sassuolo, which saw him lead them into Europe in 2015/16. He showed an ability to achieve stability, which is exactly what Sampdoria need.

Samp have recorded three-straight top 10 finishes. A fourth in a row would be a great achievement, while they’ve made a few interesting signings in order to pull it off. We’re backing Di Francesco to lead Samp to yet another top-half finish.

Serie A Relegation Predictions – Hellas Verona and Udinese

Serie A hasn’t been kind to the newcomers in recent years, with three of the last four seasons sending two teams straight back to Serie B. There’s been at least one promoted side relegated to the second tier in the last 11 years. The last time all three managed to stay up was 2007/08, when Juventus and Napoli were promoted from Serie B.

Since then, we’ve seen nine of the last 11 sides who have won the playoffs go immediately back down. There are a few reasons for this, as the Serie B playoffs are a long affair that drags well into June. The eight sides who compete in them aren’t always of the highest quality, which can leave the winner out of their depth in Serie A. We expect that to be the case this season.

Hellas Verona won promotion, but they’ve been relegated from the top flight in two of the last four seasons. They’re a real yo-yo club, but they look set for the drop. They’ve appointed Ivan Juric, a manager who has a 17% win ratio throughout his time in Italy’s top tier. In our eyes, that makes them value for the drop.

We’re also backing Udinese to drop down to Serie B. In recent seasons there was a clear side who could suffer in their second season in the top flight, but not this year. As a result, the teams who just missed out last term are vulnerable, and Udinese were awful. Late form kept them up, but they’re likely to struggle again having made little progress in terms of signings.

Serie A Top Scorer Prediction – Krzysztof Piatek

Serie A has no shortage of strikers on the move this summer. However, a man who has settled in at his current club is Krzysztof Piatek. His first season in a major European league saw him outscore Cristiano Ronaldo, while the 24-year-old can get better and better.

Piatek eased into life at Milan, but things could be about to get even better for him. He’s the obvious first choice, supported by the creative talents of Suso, Lucas Paqueta and Rade Kranic in midfield. They all offer different kinds of support, as do Milan’s adventurous full-backs. That should set Piatek up with the support he needs.

The Polish international also has the benefit of playing under the manager who lad Fabio Quagliarella to the golden boot last term. When Giampaolo arrived at Samp the striker had scored just three goals in 15/16. Quagliarella scored 57 in the following three seasons. Given that rate of improvement, we can’t wait to see how the man who bagged 22 goals last season kicks on.
