Spanish Open golf tips: 60/1, 45/1, 40/1 & 20/1 each-way selections

Jon Rahm’s maiden LIV Golf season was cut short when he withdrew from last week’s Team Championship but the Spaniard is expected to tee it up in his national Open on the DP World Tour this week.

Rahm, returning to the circuit in a last-gasp attempt to remain eligible for selection for the 2025 Ryder Cup, is the red-hot favourite in Madrid.

Racing & Football Outlook golf tipster Joe Champion nailed a 22/1 winner last week as Billy Horschel won the BMW PGA Championship and he has four each-way tips to follow in the Spanish capital.

Spanish Open Outright Selections

Matt Wallace each-way at 20/1

The Spanish Open market revolves around three-time champion Jon Rahm but he withdrew with illness last week and he’ll be the subject of media attention on his first DP World Tour start since his LIV switch.

Rahm will be tough to beat if he’s on his game at a venue where he has been victorious on two occasions. However, there are more than enough reasons to look for value elsewhere at Club de Campo Villa.

The Madrid venue, a short course given its high altitude, could prove an ideal fit for Matt Wallace, who has already demonstrated his ability to win when the ball is flying further with victory in the European Masters last month.

Wallace returned from his Crans-sur-Sierre triumph with 12th place at Wentworth, carding a magnificent Sunday 64 at a course which has never suited his eye – his previous best finish was 20th in 2018.

The Englishman, eighth at the British Masters prior to his Crans win, is full of confidence. He has been putting and scrambling well in recent tournaments and looks overpriced for a quickfire double.

Alex Fitzpatrick each-way at 40/1

Alex Fitzpatrick missed the cut by a shot last week but that could prove a blessing in disguise as he moves on to a venue where he was 20th last season.

The Sheffield man had form figures of 6-12-6-9 prior to his Wentworth setback and should continue to knock on the DP World Tour door.

Ewen Ferguson each-way at 45/1

Another with solid course form in the book is Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson, who was ninth in last season’s Spanish Open and 18th at Wentworth last week.

Ferguson won the BMW International Open in Munich in July and he was in full control of his long game at Wentworth. He putted well in Madrid last year and looks a title threat again.

Adrian Otaegui each-way at 60/1

There are a number of exciting Spanish youngsters who catch the eye this week but the best option from the home contingent could be the more experienced Adrian Otaegui.

The accurate 31-year-old is finding top form again, posting back-to-back top-20 finishes. His cold putter was also beginning to heat up at Wentworth.
