Sports Journalist at FST, Gareth qualified as a journalist after graduating from university and spent over a decade as a freelance broadcast journalist, commentator and tipster before joining FST. Now living in Manchester, he is a long suffering Bolton Wanderers fan who also enjoys boxing, the NBA, tennis and rugby league.

Picking out the winner in each of the four majors is the holy grail when it comes to golf betting and for 2023 we’ve recruited Racing Post golf expert Steve Palmer for his early tips for the four biggest events on the gold calendar.

He’s picked out a winner for each of the four majors, starting with the US Masters in April and concluding with the 151th edition of The Open at St Andrews in July, and the result is this huge 59,849/1 accumulator.

You can view his selections and back the bet below, and remember each-way bets are available covering the top four places.

When are the four 2023 golf Majors?

The four golf majors take place on the following dates:

  • The Masters – Augusta National Golf Course, 6-9 April, 2023
  • PGA Championship – Oak Hill East Course, 18-21 May, 2023
  • US Open – Los Angeles Country Club, 15-18 June, 2023
  • The Open – Royal Liverpool Golf Course, 20-23 July, 2022

Steve Palmer’s 59,849/1 acca for the four 2022 golf Majors

The Masters winner prediction: Rory McIlroy

The Masters is the one major missing from Rory McIlroy’s impressive CV but 2023 could be the year he completes his Grand Slam. His approach play has improved and he has become a far more consistent putter, two aspects of the game that are crucial to success at Augusta. McIlroy finished second at the Masters in 2022 and can go one better as he bids to end his major drought.

PGA Championship winner prediction: Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship at Southern Hills last year, and he can make it back-to-back titles and complete a hat-trick of wins in this major at Oak Hill in 2023. Thomas’ impressive iron-play looks to be his biggest weapon at Oak Hill, which has undergone a redesign since it last hosted a major in 2013, and the Kentucky-native is well placed to challenge in front of what is sure to be a raucous New York crowd.

US Open winner prediction: Collin Morikawa

Los Angeles is gearing up to hold a major for the first time in 28 years and LA-born Collin Morikawa can give the home fans something to cheer about. Morikawa has a good record at this venue, having won four points from four matches for the USA in the 2017 Walker Cup at this course, so back him to claim a third major crown and a first US Open title.

The Open winner prediction: Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth, a three-time major winner, can complete the fourfold by lifting the Claret Jug for a second time. Spieth was 36th at Royal Liverpool in 2014, but that was just his second Open start, and he has since fallen in love with this major. The Texan’s form figures from his last seven Opens are 4-30-1-9-20-2-8.

There are a few points to consider before placing this bet. Bookmakers will not allow you to pick a player multiple times – for example, if you put McIlroy in your acca for the Masters, he cannot be used for any of the other three Majors. However, six of the last seven seasons have passed without multiple Major champions – with Brooks Koepka the last man to do a double in 2018 with the PGA and US Open – so the acca wager is worth risking. Punters should also be aware of maximum payout restrictions and decide on their stake accordingly.
