The Premier League is back! Here are the biggest games to look forward to

Born in the south east of Ireland, Simon put his life-long love of football to good use when he started a successful independent blog in 2010. That opened up an alternative route to a career in journalism, and having had work published across a number of sites and publications, Simon joined the staff at Spotlight Sports Group in 2018.

The Premier League is back! After a postponement of almost three months, the 2019/20 English top flight campaign will resume behind closed doors on June 17.

Stadiums might be empty, but the season’s remaining fixture list is still full to bursting with key games that are certain to have a huge impact on the shake up for points and places at either end of the table.

With just under a quarter of the season still to contest, almost every club in the Premier League has an opportunity to change their fortunes before the division’s final round of fixtures later this summer.

After the catch-up games (Man City vs Arsenal, Aston Villa vs Sheffield United) have been completed, the season’s programme is expected to follow its original path for the rest of the campaign.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the Premier League’s most crucial looking remaining fixtures and big matches to look out for.

Remember – we’ll be covering all the action with match previews and tips on our Premier League predictions page.

Match Day 29

Manchester City vs Arsenal

While official dates for the rest of the 2019/20 Premier League’s fixture programme have yet to be fully determined, Manchester City’s meeting with Arsenal has already been pencilled in for June 17th.

The Citizens trampled all over the Gunners in embarrassing fashion when the teams last met in London back in December, and Pep Guardiola’s men will expect to at least match the 3-0 victory they secured at the Emirates Stadium.

However, former City assistant and current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta might have some inside information and tactical secrets to exploit ahead of the return game.

Match Day 30

Tottenham vs Manchester United

Jose Mourinho will be out to derail his former employer’s pursuit of Champions League qualification at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and with Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba all expected to feature in a game they would have originally missed, we could see fireworks in North London.

Everton vs Liverpool

Liverpool are potentially just two wins away from winning their first ever Premier League title and first English championship overall in 30 years, though their Merseyside rivals Everton would love nothing more than to prolong their wait for glory a little longer. Expect a full-blooded head-to-head at Goodison Park.

Match Day 31

Chelsea vs Manchester City

With their title out of reach and their place in the top four unthreatened, Manchester City find themselves in league table limbo, though Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will be desperate to put more points on the board in their attempts to land a place in next season’s Champions League.

Manchester United vs Sheffield United

With Manchester City’s impending Champions League ban still a factor, the team that finishes 5th in the Premier League could replace them in Europe’s elite club competition in 2020/21. Man Utd’s clash with the Blades could prove pivotal in determining who finishes in that potentially lucrative position.

Match Day 32

Manchester City vs Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s relentless Reds could well have the title wrapped up by the time they visit the Etihad Stadium, though there is a possibility that the Citizens will be presented with one last chance to sting the club about to replace them as Premier League champions.

Bournemouth vs Newcastle

With the Cherries battling to keep their heads above water and few winnable games left on their calendar, a home game against an inconsistent Newcastle outfit represents a chance to put some crucial points on the board to aid their survival efforts.

Match Day 33

Norwich City vs Brighton

The very definition of a relegation six-pointer, both Norwich and Brighton will be battling for their lives to drag themselves away from the Premier League’s drop zone. The Seagulls beat the Canaries 2-0 in November and a repeat result would be huge.

Wolves vs Arsenal

With Champions League qualification still on offer, big-game specialists Wolves host an Arsenal side they haven’t lost to since their promotion back to the top-flight. Wanderers beat the Gunners 3-1 in the corresponding fixture last season and will be aiming to bloody the nose of one of the league’s biggest names again.

Match Day 34

Watford vs Norwich City

The Canaries will line up for their second basement battle in as many weeks when travel to take on Watford at Vicarage Road. The Hornets turned Norwich over 2-0 in East Anglia last year – a victory that was their first of the campaign, and another triumph would help to power their drive for Premier League survival.

Sheffield United vs Wolves

With both clubs still in the mix for a continental qualification berth, all eyes will be on Bramall Lane to see which of the division’s overperformers will come out on top. The teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw on December 1 last year, and should be just as evenly matches in the return fixture.

Match Day 35

Norwich vs West Ham

Norwich City’s destiny remains very much in their own hands with their third match on the spin against one of their direct relegation rivals. The Canaries will need to avenge the 2-0 defeat they suffered against the Irons last year to land the points here.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal

Potentially the last North London derby of the decade, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal go to-to-toe for bragging rights and points in what should be an explosive encounter. With little to separate them in the table at the time of writing, a win for either team would spark a major surge in positivity during uncertain times for both.

Match Day 36

Southampton vs Brighton

This south-coast skirmish pits two clubs angling for a mid-table finish against each other at St. Mary’s Stadium. At the time of writing, the Seagulls are very much caught in a downward current towards the wrong end of the table, though the Saints sit just once place ahead of them.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

The last three meetings between Arsenal and champions elect Liverpool in league and cup produced a whopping 20 goals (6.66 per game on average). Their latest meeting and final clash of the season at the Emirates promises to be just as thrilling.

Match Day 37

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

The Villains last home game of the campaign pits them against Arsenal, and the host’s tussle with the Gunners could potentially be their last Premier League fixture at Villa Park. Dean Smith’s men will be determined to avoid that scenario playing out however.

Manchester United vs West Ham

Man Utd supporters welcome their old manager David Moyes back to Old Trafford, though a large swathe of those same fans would probably enjoy sending their old boss packing with the Irons to the Championship. The hosts, of course, will have incentives of their own to push for three points with Champions League football on the table.

Match Day 38

The 2019/20 season’s final day where all number of potential scenarios could play out!

It could be a hugely significant day in the race to secure Champions League football with Chelsea hosting Wolves and Man Utd traveling to finish their campaign at Leicester City.

In the battle for survival, relegation favourites Norwich might need a miracle at Manchester City, Aston Villa face what could prove to be a winner takes all match at fellow candidates for the drop West Ham, while both Bournemouth and Watford end their survival search with tough away assignments at Everton and Arsenal.
