Weekend Wrap - Betting trends and pointers from across Europe

After another dramatic weekend of football, most fans will want to get stuck straight back into the action so here at FST, we’re looking ahead to what is to come this week.

We all have specific markets that we prefer to play in and some leagues and teams we prefer to go into battle with, so in our weekend recap I take a look at some of the key betting trends that have continued this weekend.

Spanish goals hard to come by, with notable exceptions

La Liga has been something of a wasteland when it comes to both teams scoring this season, and that has been most evident in Valladolid.

The midtable side picked up their second win in a row with a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday and that marked the seventh league game in a row that BTTS failed to land for the White and Violets.

In fact, just 25% of their 20 La Liga matches this season have seen both teams find the net and they face an Osasuna side this weekend who have netted just 19 times in their 20 games.

But if it’s entertainment you are after in the Spanish top flight there are not many better teams to provide it than Athletic Bilbao.

The Lions beat Cadiz 4-1 on Friday and that takes their percentage of games to have gone over 3.5 goals up to 40%. They visit Valencia on Saturday looking to continue their entertaining ways.

Ligue 1 the home of BTTS

As has been highlighted on FST before, Ligue 1 has been a real hotbed for both teams scoring this season.

Troyes were beaten 3-1 by Lille at the weekend and that took them up to 82% of their games which have seen both teams find the net. Remarkably, just two teams in the French top flight have seen both teams score at a rate below 50% this season as they continue to put on competitive affairs.

The same cannot be said for Bayer Leverkusen, whose 1-0 defeat to Augsburg saw their BTTS percentage slip to 42% for the season, the lowest in the German top tier.

Xabi Alonso’s side visit Hoffenheim on Saturday, the team who top the both teams to score rankings in Germany with it landing in 68% of their matches, which team’s record will remain standing?

Home heroes and away-day woes

A strong home record is often said to be integral to teams hoping to stay up and VfL Bochum will be hoping that is correct with the Bundesliga side picking up their fifth home win from nine attempts with a 5-2 victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday.

That could bode well for their midweek DFB-Pokal matchup with Borussia Dortmund, which takes place at Vonovia-Ruhrstadion. However don’t hold out much hope for Bochum when they visit Bayern Munich this weekend, the strugglers have taken just three points from a possible 30 on the road this season.

Another team with a stark contrast in their home and away form is Ligue 1’s Lens, they have taken 30 points this season on home soil and 16 away.

The Blood and Gold drew 1-1 with Brest on the road on Sunday and as such have won just three of their 11 games away from home this season, not enough to mount a credible title challenge.

This may be worth keeping in mind as Frank Haise’s men face two crucial away games this week, visiting Lorient in the Coupe de France round of 16 on Thursday before travelling to fellow European chasers Lyon on Sunday.

Another team with a crucial match this weekend is Sporting. They picked up a huge 5-0 win over European rivals Braga in midweek, continuing their rock-solid record at home, they have won eight of their nine home league games this season.

In contrast with that they have taken just 11 points from a possible 27 on the road, Ruben Amorim’s men will be hoping to extend their good home run as they host second-placed Porto on Sunday.
