The stage is set in Qatar and, despite numerous incredible upsets and shocks, it’s two of the pre-tournament favourites battling it out for the World Cup trophy in Lusail on Sunday.

Argentina went into the World Cup as second-favourites at 11/2, while defending champions France were third in the betting at 6/1 and an Argentina vs France final was the second most likely to occur before the tournament.

With Sunday’s showdown in Lusail edging closer, I’ve put together a gigantic Bet Builder to whet your appetite.

Argentina to lift the trophy

The World Cup has been successfully defended just twice in its nearly 100-year history and I don’t expect a third occurrence in Qatar.

Argentina looked impressive against Croatia and lead the way in expected goals (11.8 vs 11.6), expected goals against (2.4 vs 6.7) and shots on target (32 vs 30) this tournament.

France were arguably lucky to get past their quarter-final tie with England and could easily have conceded against Morocco. I expect a close tie, but Argentina have the team spirit and quality to lift the trophy.

Lionel Messi & Kylian Mbappe to score or assist

Lionel Messi is looking to add a crowning jewel to a glorious career on Sunday and is leading the Golden Boot race, while also a huge favourite for the Golden Ball, but Kylian Mbappe isn’t far behind.

Messi has scored five and assisted three in this tournament and has an incredible 18 goal involvements in his last 11 appearances for club and country, only failing to score or provide twice in this period.

Mbappe lags behind his PSG teammate by just a single assist, though, and has been posting similarly impressive numbers this season. The 23-year-old has 19 goals and assists in his last 14 outings for France and PSG.

Julian Alvarez 1+ shot on target

Of the remaining players in the World Cup, only Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have had more shots on target than Julian Alvarez and the Manchester City man can test the keeper again on Sunday.

The young striker scored with both his shots against Croatia and has hit the target in three of his last four appearances. Looking further back, Alvarez has had at least one shot on target in eight of his last ten competitive appearances for club and country.

Lionel Messi 1+ shot on target in each half

Lionel Messi leads the way in plenty of metrics this tournament and one of those is shots on target, with his 14 attempts on goal unrivalled.

He has tested the keeper at least once in every match this tournament and has had at least one effort on target in 11 of his 12 halves of football, with the only exception being against Mexico in the group stage.

Nicolas Otamendi to be shown a card

Only Saudi Arabia have picked up more yellow cards than Argentina this tournament and, while many of their 12 bookings can be attributed to the fiery quarter-final against the Netherlands, it is also down to the Albiceleste’s style of play.

Three of their regular back line – Marcos Acuna, Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi, have committed a total of 27 fouls and each of them have two yellow cards to their name.

Otamendi is the only who stands out though, with the former Manchester City centre back committing more fouls (11) than any other player from the two finalists.
