First leg of the acca saw 2 European giants battle it out. Both Peiters and Olesen were level pegging at the start of the day, just 6 shots off the lead. Both players came out aggressive, making early birdies. Unfortunately for both, they were unable to keep the bogies off the card. Peiters went in to the back 9 with a 3 shot lead over the Dane. It was clear to see neither player brought their A game, but fortunately for us the Belgian was able to to come out on top, shooting a 74 (+3) beating Olesen by 3 shots.
Next up we had Sergio Garcia take on Bernd Wiesberger. Despite the Austrian winning the Scottish Open the week before, we were confident the Spaniard would come out the winner in this pairing. Sergio had a very solid front 9, shooting 35 (-1). The story wasn’t to be the same for Bernd. He went out in 39 (+3), giving Sergio a 4 shot lead with 9 to go. The 2nd leg of our acca was looking very promising. Sergio started the back 9 in awful fashion, but managed to compose himself and finish his 18 with a very respectable even par 71. The Austrian had a far better 2nd 9 but fortunately for us, could not compete with Sergio. He would go on to shoot 74 (+3)
3rd pairing saw the young Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick take on the American Webb Simpson. Even though Webb had a 1 shot lead over Fitzpatrick over the first 2 days, we saw the value with Matthew. Fitzpatrick didn’t look his best on round 3 but managed to post a 35 (-1) on the front 9. Again Simpson was not at his best. He started extremely well but let it slip towards the turn. He would go on to match the Englishman’s front 9. Fitzpatrick bogied 10 but bounced straight back with a birdie at 12. He parred in, shooting a solid score of 70 (-1). Webb Simpson just could not get anything going today. He finished the day at level par 71, meaning the Englishman won by a narrow margin of just 1 shot! It was all down to the final match!!
Cameron Smith was paired up with the big Dane, Lucas Bjerregaard. Both players have found some fine form of late so this was set to be a great match. Our golf analyst placed his faith in the young Australian and he was right to do so. He produced nothing special in round 3, but battled hard and got the job done. He went on to shoot level par 71, to remain at a very respectable -6 for the tournament. It was an extremely up and down day for the Dane. Plenty of birdies, too many bogies and not enough pars. He went on to shoot a 74 (+3) meaning Smith won this pairing by 3 shots to land our 11/1 Open Championship Acca!
