6 Summer transfers to watch after Euro 2024

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

With Euro 2024 behind us, there’s still around a month to fill before the Premier League returns. That month will be full of rampant transfer speculation, after a lacklustre start to the summer window that has been filled with far too much PSR chat.

While English clubs have thrown money around, many of the biggest sides have yet to strengthen. That’s left plenty of disgruntled or sought after stars waiting on the sidelines, teeing up some potential sagas.

Below are six players to watch in the summer window, along with a look at the betting favourites to land them.

Ivan Toney

Tottenham 13/8, Arsenal 7/2, Man United 9/2, Chelsea 5/1

Ivan Toney’s stock is incredibly low, despite a couple of cameos for England in the Euro 2024 knockouts. The forward is a proven Premier League goalscorer, but his 2023/24 campaign was a difficult one.

Toney would fill a position of need for many top clubs, including Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea. He finished the 2022/23 season with 20 goals in 33 league games and if Brentford could have cashed in off the back of that season they’d have likely made a huge profit.

The Bees are in a tougher position this summer, given Toney’s struggles and the fact that he has less than 12 months remaining on his contract. That should force their hand into selling, but they won’t get anything like the value he had 18 months ago.

Manchester United’s move for Joshua Zirkzee seems to rule them out, while Toney’s age doesn’t make him much of a fit for Chelsea. If interest remains cool and his price starts to tumble, a left-field side like West Ham (13/2), Newcastle (17/2) or Liverpool (12/1) could emerge.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Man United 3/10, Real Madrid 6/1, Tottenham 12/1

Branthwaite was unlucky not to make England’s Euro 2024 squad but the Everton defender surely has a lot of caps in his future. He broke into the Toffees’ side last season and he’s quickly become an asset for the club.

Everton are close to a deal to sell Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50million, taking their total sales for the summer to over £70million. That has eased their financial issues, but a massive bid for Branthwaite would be hard to ignore.

The defender is heavily odds-on to make a move to Man United before the window closes on August 30. The Red Devils have already made two bids for the defender this summer and they’re likely to pursue a deal throughout the summer.

Victor Osimhen

PSG 13/8, Chelsea 3/1, Arsenal 3/1

As potential summer transfers go, there’s none bigger than Victor Osimhen. The forward fired Napoli to the Serie A title in 2023, before suffering a stop-start follow-up campaign.

Osimhen has established himself as one of the best strikers in world football, giving him the kind of transfer fee teams outside the Premier League would struggle to meet. PSG seem to be the only rivals for England’s top sides and they’re the betting favourites as they chase a Kylian Mbappe replacement.

It is hard to imagine that Antonio Conte would take charge of the Partenopei without certain guarantees around Osimhen. However, Conte is believed to be pushing Napoli’s interest in bringing Romelu Lukaku back to Italy, which could offer Chelsea an advantage in the Osimhen chase.

Conor Gallagher

Aston Villa 13/8, Tottenham 7/2, Newcastle 6/1

Chelsea had a bright end to last season, but academy product Gallagher was a rare bright spot through a mixed season. The midfielder played a key role in the Blues’ brilliant run in, offering balance to their midfield alongside Moises Caicedo, who was remarkably better once Gallagher replaced Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez is back to fitness ahead of this campaign and he’s unlikely to make way for Gallagher. Add in that Chelsea have changed managers once again and added more midfield depth in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Gallagher’s place looks under threat.

The midfielder is out of contract in 2025 and the Blues have been trying to move him for over a year. The English sides linked with him look to have moved on, making Atletico Madrid at 2/1 interesting contenders for his signature.

Eberechi Eze

Tottenham 8/11, Arsenal 7/2, Man United 12/1

Crystal Palace have already lost Michael Olise this summer and they’ll be reluctant to let another key attacker depart. The Eagles were brilliant in the run-in with Eze and Olise thrilling behind red-hot Jean-Philippe Mateta, but that form put their star names in high-demand.

Eze has been heavily linked with a switch to Tottenham and that move across London could suit him. He fits with the group Spurs are building under Ange Postecoglou, but he would be a second expensive midfield addition after Archie Gray.

He will have no shortage of Premier League suitors, while Palace won’t let him leave without a fight. Clubs like Liverpool and Aston Villa who could offer him European football are interesting contenders, they’re 14/1 and 18/1 respectively.

Ederson

While it has been quietly rumbling under the radar so far, Ederson’s future could be huge in next season’s Premier League title race. The Brazilian goalkeeper has had consistent links with a switch to Saudi Arabia and it seems Man City are in a fight to keep him at the Etihad.

Ederson arrived at City in 2017 and helped them to the title in his first season. The former Benfica stopper has played a part in every title Pep Guardiola has won at the Etihad, solving a huge problem in goal.

Guardiola’s first season in England was undone by City’s inability to field a reliable goalkeeper who was comfortable with the ball at his feet. While that is an easier role to fill seven years on, replacing Ederson would be a massive issue for City.

The club’s approach tends to be that they don’t stand in the way of players who line up a move, so Ederson could force the issue. Thinking back to their struggles before he arrived and Ederson’s potential departure could be the difference in next season’s title race.
