With the Olympics officially getting underway this weekend, we have asked our experts who they think is a shoo-in for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, with a clean consensus emerging.

Keely Hodgkinson ticks all the right boxes to claim the award this year. The last three winners have all been female, and Athletics stars lead the way in the award with 18 wins, 14 silver medals and 21 third-place finishes.

For reference, the sport with the second-most wins is Formula One with eight, and the sport with the second-most overall top-three finishes is football with 24.

Hodginson is 1/3 favourite for the gold medal in the 800m and the BBC love giving the SPOTY to an Olympic hero.

Luke Littler’s World Championship exploits probably came too early in the year and with athletics being a hugely popular BBC sport, Keely Hodgkinson looks a great shout to come out on top if, as expected, she claims gold in Paris in the 800m.

With a much higher price available for her to win SPOTY, that could be the way to go.

The BBC’s cloying love affair with the Olympics spells trouble for Luke Littler backers so 800m favourite Keely Hodgkinson is a worthy market leader.

Fellow athletes Matthew Hudson-Smith and Josh Kerr face tougher tests in the 400m and 1,500m but, at odds of 20-1 and 25-1 for SPOTY, they are tempting each-way options with three places available.

Keely Hodgkinson goes odds-on over the next fortnight after she takes Olympic gold in the 800m. The 22-year-old is an absolute gem, the BBC love her, and the BBC are covering the Games in Paris. Everything is in her favour. Take the 12/5 now while it’s there.
