Ahead of the Curve: Can Ruben Amorim turn the tide at Old Trafford?
Content Editor at Free Super Tips, Alex was born in the shadow of Old Trafford and is an avid Man Utd fan. After graduating from university he combined his love of football, writing and betting to join FST and now closely follows goings-on in all of the top European leagues.
Manchester United confirmed the capture of Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s successor at the end of the working week and, while he is still a week or so from officially joining the club, we have asked our panel of experts if the rising star of management is the right man for the job.
Alex Wrigley
There is no denying Amorim’s credentials after he ended a 19-year Porto/Benfica stranglehold on the Portuguese top flight at the age of just 36 before adding another to his trophy cabinet last season. However, there have been many ‘right men for the job’ over the past decade, and their continued failure all but confirms that the issues are systemic. On the bright side, INEOS’s involvement plus a new, talented young coach could prove a turning point for the tumultuous club.
Joe Champion
By all accounts he has a touch of class but he may well need a touch of magic to sort this United side, but if he is given time and the budget he may well be the right man to lead the side forward. The next couple of weeks will be vital and any business done in January needs to hit the right note.
James Mason
There is no denying Amorim’s managerial record at Sporting, with two Primeira Liga titles among five trophies he has delivered, but will he be able to handle the increased scrutiny and pressure of being United boss? The 39-year-old will have plenty of hunger and desire to succeed and I think it’s right the club haven’t gone for a stop-gap, as this would just be kicking the can down the road. A positive start will be needed to keep the fanbase on side, but there is a lot to like about Amorim’s selection.
Ian Wilkerson
Haven’t we been here before? Another leading continental coach being punished through the Old Trafford door like a pig in an abattoir. There have been too many managers at United to suggest the issues are anything but cultural. Unless he’s going to bash a few heads together and give the Teflon players a few home truths, I reckon it’s just going to be a big blot on his CV and we’ll be back here in a couple of seasons.
Warren Ashurst
He may prove to be a good appointment down the line, but I felt they would have been better bringing in someone with Premier League experience. Thomas Frank would have been one possibility or getting Thomas Tuchel signed up before England came calling. Amorim sounds like he would be a popular choice with the United fans, which would mean a positive atmosphere from the start at Old Trafford.
