Alfred Dunhill Championship golf tips & 51/1 each-way double

The DP World Tour’s Opening Swing continues in South Africa this week as the iconic Leopard Creek Country Club hosts the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Action from the US comes in the form of the Grant Thornton Invitational, a team tournament which features 16 mixed duos made up of PGA Tour and LPGA Tour professionals.

Racing & Football Outlook golf tipster Joe Champion has taken a look at both events to put together an each-way double which pays out at 51/1.

Alfred Dunhill Championship – Louis Oosthuizen at 17/2

Louis Oosthuizen proved 12 months ago that he remains a big fish when he appears in the relatively small DP World Tour pond, winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Mauritius Open, and he’ll bid to defend the first of those titles this week.

Leopard Creek Country Club in Mpumalanga, South Africa, has hosted the Alfred Dunhill since 2005 and is perhaps best known for its proximity to Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves.

Once considered a big-hitters’ paradise, Leopard Creek has increasingly favoured accurate drivers of the ball and that’s become Oosthuizen’s calling card as he’s entered his fifth decade.

The 2010 Open champion leads a strong South African quartet at the front of the market and it’s entirely possible that lightning strikes twice in an event in which he has form of 2-MC-7-7-1 from his last five appearances.

Last year, Oosthuizen had taken two months off prior to winning the Alfred Dunhill but this time he returns without any questions over his wellbeing, finishing third and 17th on the Asian Tour over the last fortnight.

Whether that’s a positive or negative remains to be seen but the 42-year-old knows Leopard Creek well and fully deserves his favourite tag given he pulled eight shots clear of fourth place in the 2023 renewal.

Grant Thornton Invitational winner prediction – Tom Kim & Jeeno Thitikul at 9/2

The PGA Tour and LPGA Tour join forces this week for the final tournament on the 2024 schedule, the Grant Thornton Invitational, in which 16 mixed pairs will compete for the title from Friday to Sunday.

This three-round contest, which replaced the QBE Shootout last year, features a first-round scramble, second-round foursomes (alternate shot), and a final round of modified fourball.

As was the case last season, the tournament takes place at Tiburon Golf Club’s Gold Course, a venue which also hosted the QBE Shootout and remains the home of the LPGA’s CME Group Tour Championship.

Tony Finau and Nelly Korda are the strongest team on paper but there are question marks over Finau’s fitness and the better bet could be the in-form pairing of Tom Kim and Jeeno Thitikul.

Top-class Thitikul signed off the LPGA season with a win at Tiburon while Kim found only the brilliant Scottie Scheffler too strong in the Hero World Challenge last week.

Both players are strong putters, Thitikul in particular, and that’s generally the key to success in this low-scoring event.
