After a long summer of transfer rumours regarding who Arsene Wenger will sign as his new striker, nothing has materialised. This will come as a shock to almost no one, as Wenger is notorious for refusing to sign players even when he needs them. However, that may not be the case anymore, as it is reported that Arsenal are planning to make a £29 million bid for Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi, swapping him for Olivier Giroud as well in the deal.

The 23-year old has been a target of rival Serie A side Napoli ever since they resigned to the fact that Gonzalo Higuain was going to join Juventus this summer. That deal cost Juventus around £75 million so it left Napoli with plenty of money to splash as they hope to bring the young Argentinian to Naples. They hav spent £42 million of that on Polish internationals Arkadiusz Milik and Piotr Zielinski, but still have nearly £35 million left over as well as any other funds they may have.

Both sides have guaranteed Champions League football, but it is likely that Icardi would prefer a move to the Premier League with Arsenal, as there is a greater chance to win trophies and play in what many consider the best league in the world, but it is yet to be seen whether he will take the move away from the Italian capital at all.

Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini has been sacked this summer after a poor season. They finished 4th in Serie A, only qualifying for the Europa League. He was a big fan of Icardi, so without him at the club anymore, that could be a major push factor for Icardi to move away from Inter.

During his 3 seasons at Inter, Mauro Icardi has made 88 appearances and scored 47 goals in the league. He scored 22 in 36 games in the 2014-15 season, prompting many clubs to turn their attentions to the young Argentinian. He stayed with Inter, but after another great season, scoring 16 in 29 games, it is unlikely that they’ll be able to keep hold of their star man.
