Canadian Open & European Open tips with 597/1 double

The PGA Tour season continues this week with one of the oldest events on the calendar, the Canadian Open, where Rory McIlroy travels north of the border in an attempt to win the tournament for a third time.

McIlroy is not the only Northern Irishman taking centre stage this week as Tom McKibbin returns to Green Eagle Golf Courses in Winsen, Germany, where he will attempt to defend his European Open crown.

Racing & Football Outlook golf tipster Joe Champion has picked a winner for each event and together they combine for a huge 597/1 double, which we recommend backing as an each-way bet.

Canadian Open winner prediction – Shane Lowry at 25/1

First held in 1904, the nomadic Canadian Open returns to Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the first time since 2019, when Rory McIlroy destroyed the field in a seven-shot triumph, then he followed up by winning again when the event was next held at St George’s in 2022.

Following victories at the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship, McIlroy underwhelmed when 12th at the US PGA Championship but he’s the standout performer in a weak Canadian field and he is rated as the 4/1 favourite.

McIlroy’s chances are obvious but the man who partnered him to Zurich Classic glory, Shane Lowry, is another who has compelling claims this week at much juicier odds.

Hamilton is an ancient course designed by Harry Colt, the man behind both Royal Portrush and Wentworth’s West Course, venues where Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship and the 2022 BMW PGA Championship.

Wentworth, where Lowry has had ten top-20 finishes from his last 11 appearances, is visually similar to tree-lined Hamilton and the Irishman immediately took to this week’s venue when second behind McIlroy five years ago.

He was quick to admit that his partner carried him to glory in New Orleans but Lowry was sixth at the US PGA on his most recent start and he looks primed for another big week in Canada.

European Open winner prediction – Tom McKibbin at 22/1

Tom McKibbin was 100/1 when landing the European Open on his Green Eagle debut last season but the 21-year-old Belfast man fully deserves to be fighting it out for favouritism as he bids to defend the title this week.

Green Eagle, measuring more than 7,800 yards from the back tees, ranks among the toughest venues on the DP World Tour each year and while its sheer length encourages longer hitters, the water which is in play on almost every hole means that accuracy is of equal importance.

McKibbin is not only fairly long off the tee but he’s also one of the most accurate drivers on the circuit and there is every chance he can mount a successful defence of his crown having finished in the top 25 in eight of his last nine DP World Tour events – the exception coming in Singapore when he was suffering with illness.

The 21-year-old hasn’t played a tournament since the beginning of May but he shot 69-67 to qualify for the US Open last Monday so he should be raring to go.
