Honda Classic winner prediction: Daniel Berger at 10/1

Daniel Berger is favourite for the Honda Classic despite the fact he had an MRI scan on a rib injury on Monday. Berger has not revealed the results of that hospital visit, but he has been given a tee-time for the Honda and seems set to play.

The Floridian lives close to the PGA National track, so is able to give himself a late fitness test and decide on Thursday morning whether he is ready to tee up, but punters taking the short odds against his name are taking a leap of faith.

Berger played well at PGA National as a junior, then lost a Honda playoff to Padraig Harrington in 2015, so his course credentials are strong. And his recent results, including victory in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month, are also compelling.

Honda Classic outsider prediction: Sungjae Im at 12/1

If fully-fit, expect Berger to make an impact, but a safer investment is Sungjae Im. The consistent Korean has produced two remarkable debut performances in the last four months – a tie for second in the Masters in November, then fifth place in the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January – and this week he tees up at a course he knows well.

Im is the defending champion, having triumphed in tough conditions 12 months ago, and his record in Florida generally is fantastic. He is becoming increasingly comfortable with his latest caddie – Bobby Brown – and has built a solid bank of form this year without claiming any silverware.

Im may be too good for a weak PGA Tour field, but each-way punters may also want to add Michael Thompson to their staking plan. Thompson, the 2013 Honda champion and winner of the 3M Open last July, was fifth in The American Express at the end of January and relishes PGA National.
