Golf tips: Austrian Open predictions

For the first time since November, the European Tour tees off on its home continent this week when the Austrian Golf Open commences at the Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg.

Last year, Marc Warren edged Marcel Schneider by a shot to claim the prize, though we’ve picked out two different players from this year’s field in betting tips for the tournament below.

Austrian Open predictions and betting tips

Austrian Open course guide and where to watch

Course: Diamond Country Club, Atzenbrugg, Austria

Par: 72

Field: 144

Where to watch: Live on Sky Sports Main Event and Golf from 12.30pm on Thursday

Time difference: Austria is one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland

Austrian Open winner prediction: Thomas Detry at 10/1

Thomas Detry has eased for the Austrian Open as the week has worn on – and the Belgian bomber has become a backable price at double-figure offers. Opening shows had Detry shorter in the betting – and the punting community seemed loath to back a European Tour maiden at single-figure odds – but the lack of support for the favourite has provided an opportunity for punters on tournament-eve.

It is widely accepted on the Tour that a breakthrough victory for Detry is almost inevitable at some stage – the 28-year-old is blessed with too many golfing gifts to remain without silverware for much longer – and the low-grade gathering at Diamond Country Club is an ideal chance to claim a trophy.

Detry has an advantage over his main market rivals in terms of course experience – he finished eighth in the event last year. The likes of Sam Horsfield and Rasmus Hojgaard, although talented and feared, have never had a competitive round at Diamond CC.

Detry finished 13th in the Corales Puntacana Championship last time out – a PGA Tour event – so this sharp downgrade to a humdrum European Tour shootout should mean he goes extremely close to victory. He has finished second three times on the Tour, including twice last year. His Challenge Tour triumph in 2016 came by a 12-shot margin, so he clearly has the tools to run away from a field when carrying his A-game.

Austrian Open outsider prediction: Wil Besseling at 55/1

An alternative to Detry at much bigger odds is Wil Besseling, who finished third in last year’s Austrian Open. The Dutchman showed a liking for Diamond CC, outscoring everyone on the Sunday of the event with a closing 66, and the big-hitter can take advantage of a rain-softened track over the next four days. Detry and Besseling will both have high hopes of a maiden victory.
