Huge 588/1 St Jude & Handa Invitational winners double

It is the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs this week and 19 of the world’s top 20 players are assembled at TPC Southwind for the FedEx St Jude Championship.

The top 125 players in the points list have made it this far and the field will be whittled down to 70 for next week’s BMW Championship, before the top 30 will fight it out for a $18m first prize at the Tour Championship.

Rory McIlroy is set to go off favourite to see off the elite field, while there is also action on the DP World Tour as hopefuls assemble in Northern Ireland for the ISPS Handa World Invitational.

Racing Post tipster Ian Wilkerson has selections for both tournaments, which can be backed as a 588/1 each-way double or as individual bets.

588/1 Golf each-way double

If you fancy a 588/1 each-way double this week, it could pay to back Sungjae Im at 30/1 at the FedEx St Jude Championship as the South Korean has finished runner-up in his last two tournaments.

And the strongest challenge in Northern Ireland could come from accurate American John Catlin who is 18/1. He won the 2020 Irish Open at Galgorm Castle in County Antrim, which hosts this week’s tournament.

Im has been knocking at the door in the last couple of weeks, finishing runner-up to Tony Finau at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and then to fellow South Korean Joohyung Kim at last week’s Wyndham Championship.

Kim’s success could inspire him, but of much more relevance should be that Kim is ranked highly in both strokes-gained: tee-to-green and in greens in regulation, skills which should help him come to the fore at TPC Southwind where accuracy is the key attribute.

Im has demonstrated he is comfortable in elite company – he was second and eighth at the last two Masters tournaments – and, among a talented field, it is just possible that he will sneak under the radar.

There is a lack of depth to the field in the DP World Tour event this week, but American Catlin could come to the fore.

He already knows what it is like to taste victory at Galgorm Castle, having triumphed there in the 2020 Irish Open, when he finished with a blistering 64, and punters should not be put off by a disappointing finish at Celtic Manor this week as this tight track should play to his strengths.

The nearby Massereene course will also be used this week, but Catlin tied for seventh in this tournament last year so this is a test where he can be expected to flourish.
