In The Mixer: Who impressed for their new Premier League club?

Sports Journalist at FST, Gareth qualified as a journalist after graduating from university and spent over a decade as a freelance broadcast journalist, commentator and tipster before joining FST. Now living in Manchester, he is a long suffering Bolton Wanderers fan who also enjoys boxing, the NBA, tennis and rugby league.

In The Mixer is FST’s weekly column where we catch up with our team of football betting experts and get their opinion on the hot topic of the week.

The first round of Premier League fixtures is now complete and there were a host of new faces of show over the weekend as some summer signings made their first competitive appearances for their new clubs.

We caught up with our team of experts and asked which signing caught their eyes over the course of the last few days.

James Milton

Newcastle fans were not impressed by the role played by Southampton striker Ben Brereton Diaz in Fabian Schar’s first-half red card at St James’ Park on Saturday.

However, Saints need a bit of edge up front if they are to avoid a swift return to the Championship and the bustling, streetwise Brereton Diaz – still only 25 years old – certainly has an eye for goal.

He had a couple of efforts against Newcastle, linking up well with Adam Armstrong, and can build on last season’s promising loan spell in which he scored six goals in 14 Premier League starts for doomed Sheffield United.

Phil Agius

Savinho’s first Premier League appearance for Manchester City lasted only 45 minutes but that was more than enough to give the impression that he can become a regular in Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

The Brazilian winger was signed from Troyes in the summer after playing on loan at Girona in La Liga last season and was able to showcase his silky ball skills on the right side of the City attack before making way for Phil Foden at half-time.

By that point he had already shown he is likely to become a fans’ favourite for the champions.

Joe Casey

Yankuba Minteh had to come off after 45 minutes of his Premier League debut for Brighton against Everton but he showed a glimpse of why the Seagulls broke their club record to sign him.

The former Newcastle man set up Kaoru Mitoma for the first goal and caused the Everton defence all sorts of problems with his pace and trickery.

His combination play with Mitoma will be crucial for Brighton this term and there are not many teams that have a more dangerous combination of wide players in the league.

Liam Flin

Irrespective of his hefty price tag, Amadou Onana looked like a smart signing by Aston Villa this summer and he impressed against West Ham at the London Stadium.

His headed goal after four minutes was the perfect start to life at Villa and his aerial presence will be crucial this season.

But he also controlled the game in the middle of the park, finishing with a pass accuracy just shy of 97 per cent and making three tackles, two interceptions and three clearances to assist Villa’s defence in the capital.

He and Youri Tielemans could form a formidable fulcrum of the Villa midfield this term.

Henry Hardwicke

It was a short appearance as a substitute for Crysencio Summerville on his West Ham debut, but I don’t think it will be too long until the 22-year-old is a regular starter for the Hammers.

Summerville scored 19 goals for Leeds in the Championship last season and the Dutchman showed plenty of promise when representing the Whites in the 2020-23 Premier League season.

Julen Lopetegui may have to rejig his system to fit Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Summerville in his starting line-up, but I expect the 24-year-old to be a breakout star this term.

Will Maxwell

Despite being part of a West Ham defence that conceded twice against Aston Villa, I was impressed by the performance of Max Kilman on Saturday. The former Wolves captain was a major reason why the Hammers were still in the match for large periods, with his presence enough to put off Leon Bailey in the first half as he rounded goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Two tackles, two interceptions and seven clearances for West Ham’s most expensive defender is a decent return on his debut and he is likely to be a permanent fixture of this backline throughout the campaign.

Ian Wilkerson

Amadou Onana struck me as an excellent signing for Aston Villa after his strong performances for Everton last season and you can hardly have a brighter start to your debut than scoring a goal after just four minutes, which he did against West Ham on Saturday.

He has already demonstrated his value to Unai Emery’s side and we can get used to him having an impact from Villa’s set-pieces.

But you can see what managers mean when they like signings who have already proved themselves in the Premier League and it was noticeable that he was one of the few new boys to gain a start in Saturday’s matches.

He expertly sets up play and provides great strength for Villa in the middle of the park and he is likely to get better and better.
